Title: A Note on the Installer Size
Post by: wilco64256 on September 17, 2010, 11:00:31 AM
I figured that now would be an excellent time to post a heads up on the size of this next installer.  What we're getting ready to release tomorrow is a full Episode 1 and Episode 2 installer with everything patched and ready to go, the size of the whole thing is 757 MB.  You can download and install from this file even if you already have Episode 1 installed on your computer with no problem - just be sure to point the installer to the same directory where Episode 1 was installed previously if you put it somewhere other than the default location and you should be good to go.

We are also working on a second installer that installs all of Episode 2 and just patches the necessary additional data into Episode 1.  That one will be a good deal smaller but likely won't be available until sometime next week.

Just wanted to make sure everybody was aware of the size up front, and I'm also curious how many people would plan on waiting a few extra days just for the smaller download or if you still plan to download the bigger file so you can play sooner.

In the future there won't be anywhere near as much stuff that we're patching into previous Episodes so you won't be looking at having to download all three all over again if you already have 1 and 2 when Episode 3 comes out.

oh good.  I was actually gonna ask this before... but does this mean all the new ep 2 features (like short narration and improved walking or whatever) will also be in episode 1 after installing episode 2?

Weldon, in order to make Episode 2 work, I had to first delete the original, non-patched Episode 1 and then run the installer.

Was that an abnormal case or should people be aware of this?

Your case seems to be the anomaly - we've tested this dozens of times, especially since you reported having a problem with it, and only one other person ran into any problem which was different from what you encountered but also resolved by re-running this installer from scratch.  The vast majority of the time it has worked just fine.

Hello I have some questions to ask. Will the first installer, that cames out tomorrow, have any advantage what so ever over the second installer released later this week? Also how long would the first installer take to download through my modem? episode 1 took half an hour.

Episode 2 will take you about an hour to download.

The installer released tomorrow installs patched versions of Episodes 1 and 2. The installer to be released next week only patches Episode 1, and installs Episode 2.

If Episode 1 only took half an hour then you'll probably be able to download this one in a little over an hour or so, not too bad.

There's only one real advantage of tomorrow's version over the later patching version we'll release:

Tomorrow comes sooner than next week.

The only difference between the two is the date they become available and the size.  If you're not concerned about the size then I'd say go ahead and get tomorrow's version.

Do we still have to apply the windows 7 specific separate patch, or is this already included with the recent release?

I think I remember hearing that it's already installed, so you don't have to worry about it :)

If you've already applied the Windows 7 patch, you shouldn't have to do it again.

1) Yes, you can (I did). You can also start directly from Episode 2 if you want.
2) I think they'll release a smaller file containing only Episode 2 + all the changes applicable to Episode 1 as well (running, subtitles size, etc...)
3) Yes (798 MB if I remember right)

I suggest you to download it now, there's no need to wait, unless you have a slow Internet connection.

Still waiting for the smaller Eps 2 installer...  :)

So are we.  I'll try to get an update to you guys sometime this weekend.

UPDATE:  This is turning out to be more complex than we originally thought for a variety of reasons, not the least of which being how much data we actually modified within Episode 1 and how complex it is to patch in just the modified bits without having to replace every file completely.  We're going to need at least another week or a little longer to get this thing working the way we want it to and get some testing in, sorry for the delay!

sounds at this point like it might just be worth it to suck it up and download the huge file.  after all, it will still be faster than waiting another week and will have the same effect in the end.
