Post by: windman on October 06, 2010, 01:59:00 PM
For those of you who are interested I would like to say that I have just learn't Infamous Adventures is bringing out Kings Quest 2.5 or perhaps 3.5

It is called Kings Quest ~ Kingdom of Sorrows and won't be out this year but it currently in production.

Some of you may know the excellent work they did updating Kings Quest III ~ To Heir is Human.

eww when you first posted I thought, from the title, that activision was making a new one!
yeah that game looks like it will be legit.   I think aside from TSL it's the only original non sierra full length KQ game.

I'm excited for Kingdom of Sorrow. If it doesn't meet my expectations, then Lambonius and Blackthorne will be hearing from me.

Looking forward to it. Best of the three books, imo.

Atec, it wouldn't be the worst thing in the world if Activision decided to make a KQ game. I'd be pretty happy actually, because such a game, unlike a fangame (not to demean them, but they have inherent disadvantages), a commercial game would have nice modern graphics and professional voice acting. It would be cool to see KQ in modern 3D.

It would depend what they did with/to it. :-\

You wouldn't have to view it as canon even though Activision owns the rights. You could just view it as a modern adventure game with the KQ characters.

But it's not as if this point matters, because Activision will never release a KQ game.

It's going to have a rhythm-sequenced, music mini-game and online multiplayer. Isn't that what all gamers want?  :P

Joking aside, if Activision were to allow another installment in the King's Quest franchise to be made, I hope they realize that they have a demographic that they are obligated to cater to before "selling out" to the masses.

Yeah I'm excited about the Kingdom of Sorrow game. As for a new game from Activision I would hope it to
be better than moe even though I am not the biggest fan of Connor its not that. And its not because its
got violence in it. To me the violence was a little too gory and getting extra points for killing birds etc seemed
wrong. I love the Quest for Glory series so if they have to have violence I would say this is the way to go.

I don't think activision would do what I want with the series.  Unless maybe they were smart enough to get roberta, ken, jane jenson, whoever from the original team........but that would never happen.  I just wouldn't want a big company like activision making a KQ9.

whatever.  It won't happen whether we like it or not, I think.

Hahah!  Good lord, I can only imagine.

I can only hope that what we make others find enjoyable.  I know that in playing the in-house alpha testing copies, I've experienced a lot of joy in exploring what we've created so far.

In the end, I know I like what we've done - so I hope others can feel that way too.

But yeah, if you think it sucks I expect to hear from you!

I look forward to playing your game! I'm sure it's not going to be bad. Your other games have been fantastic and I lurk on your forums every now and then to see what you are up too.

BTW, this is the one book I have never read and am really excited to see what you come up with.

I can't imagine IA making anything that sucks. (Or at least if they did, they probably wouldn't release it.) :)

RW and KW are retired; JJ is working on other things (Gray Matter). The original team is effectively gone.

And if there was a new KQ game, I would hope that the creators wouldn't try to make their game like a Roberta/Ken/Jane collaboration. As Cez has stated multiple times, if you try to emulate someone else's style in a game (or anything, for that matter), it will fall flat. The theoretical new creators should take the KQ characters and locations and bring their own spirit and inflection to the series, much like how PO has done.

Not surprisingly, I strongly disagree with this statement.  ;)  Or rather, I think that it needs qualification.  I don't think its fair to say it will ALWAYS fall flat.  I think there's a fine line between "injecting one's personal flavor" and simply removing/replacing the elements that made the original creations so charming--once you've done that, it might as well be a different thing entirely.  Not saying that's what TSL has done (yet--I've got my eyes on you ;D,) just saying that in general, there is a balance to be reached.  I think it's fully possible to create a game based on another's creative vision and still find ways to make it seem fresh while retaining all of what was great about the original.  That's the mark of a great designer.

For what it's worth, I think TSL has done a pretty good job so far of maintaining this balance, despite my initial reservations.

Yes, I would agree. I'm asserting that in the extreme case, a Roberta/Ken/Jane clone will fall flat.

I agree that you can find a happy medium of emulating Robert/Ken/Jane and new inflection. And I think TSL is doing this well thusfar.

I don't know why Jane keeps being brought up--wasn't she only intimately involved in the design of KQ6?  Wouldn't a more accurate original team be Roberta/Ken/Josh?

well, to be fairly honest, if you include Josh in that statement, you may include Jane too. Wasn't Josh only involved in KQ5 for the most part?

I say the only reason why Jane is brought up is because her hand shaped most of what is, I think by far, the fan's favorite. But it's probably most accurate to just say Ken/Roberta and leave it at that :)

I'm sure Baggins could tell us who was involved in the creation of what games.  ;)

I just know that KQ6 had a charm that I couldn't find in any other King's Quest, and Jane Jensen was the factor of change. She was even responsible for the concept of the Black Cloaks. I won't say that King's Quest 6 was only good because of Jane, but she did collaborate fairly well with Roberta. That's why King's Quest 6 was my favorite. But my second favorite was King's Quest 3, so maybe I'm just an Alexander fanboy.  :-\

She was the writer and looks like also a director on KQ6, actually. Her IMDb page: http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0421497/

She wrote the ''text and dialogue'', her and Roberta wrote the storyline and created the design of the game together. In the game booklet, both Jane and Roberta are credited as the directors and co-designers.
For a game that is mostly not a Roberta game, look at KQ7. Roberta envisioned for the direction of the game (Disney style) and probably wrote the general storyline and left the rest to Lorelei and probably then reviewed the final product with her.

Josh Mandel is someone we shouldn't forget. A lot of people have only linked him with his participation in KQV and KQVI. Josh was uncredited for his work as Producer and Writer for King's Quest 1 SCI. So all of those who like that game, and AGDI's remake of it.. have to thank good old Mr.Mandel.

Cheers  ;)

Josh Mandel is all around a class act.  No other former Sierra big name has been as supportive of the fans as he has.  His amiability and willingness to contribute to fan projects is unparalleled, and is just really friggin' awesome.  :)  He's made a number of small contributions to the SQ2 project, and is currently working on some surprises for the game's pdf manual.
