Title: Boston Gathering 12/26
Post by: brlinton on November 08, 2010, 09:02:19 PM
Hey all! I wanted to have a gathering for any TSL fans in the Boston area on 12/26 (Day After Christmas). I spoke with Katie H. and she will be attending as well probably (as soon as she double checks the family thing.. but most likely) ;) I was thinking the Union Oyster House in Boston, which is for all ages. Who would be interested? Also, please respond if you're under 21, as the UOH is 21 under friendly and if we don't have anyone under 21 we may move the venue.

-Brian & Katie

w00t! Yeah, I need to double-check on not having family obligations that day, but I'm pretty sure I'll be good to go for it. :)

Under 21 and not available on that day. :(

The Union Oyster House is under-21 friendly, it's one of the reasons we picked that location. Sorry to hear you're unavailable, though, Doon!

Ditto, on that account. I'm 6 hours away, possible snow, and right after Christmas. That's a triple entente of doom.

SIGN ME UP! Why did you guys not tell me about this beforehand?! Granted, I gotta somehow explain to my parents why I'm going into Boston the day after christmas... But seriously, this is awesome! And I'm under 21, so please don't move the venue... Oh, this is gonna be AWESOME! And I may try to drag my friend with me (who currently doesn't have an account on the forums), but convincing both her and her parents this is a worthwhile thing to do may be difficult... Either way, I plan on going!

Wish I could go.  I've always wanted to go to Boston but never made it.  Even when I lived up in Connecticut.  Ah well.  If you guys ever meet up in the Pittsburgh area on the other hand, that one I can go to.

I would probably be interested, but the day after Christmas is usually an all-hands-on-deck kind of day in retail so I will have to wait until we have the schedule for that week to confirm anything.

Title: Re: Boston Gathering 12/26
Post by: KatieHal on November 28, 2010, 11:10:32 AM
Welcome to the forums!

As it's a Sunday, I'm thinking we'll be going closer to lunch than dinner, although an exact time hasn't been decided.

For parking, look up what parking is available in the Faneuil Hall/Quincy Market area in Boston. Garages won't be cheap, but there are a few in the area. There is some street parking around there, but it's hard to find spots that are open where & when you want them.

If you have easy access to public transportation, I would recommend taking the T into the city and getting off at the Government Center stop.

I'm hoping to be able to go. I'm gonna try and drag my friend down with me who's been rather stubborn about visiting the website. I just gotta convince my parents about this whole thing... Granted, I have a car, and I am a legal adult, so I don't really need their permission... I'll keep all of you informed.

still live at home myself, and normally I just do the same. But, they're gonna ask questions about why I'm going into boston. They're not into the technology age, and they will most definitely tell me they think that going into boston to meet you guys will result in my body being dumped in some nameless river. Trying to reason with them is futile sometimes... Coincidentally, they also don't exactly know that I work for Phoenix, but I am a legal adult, as I was when I joined the team, so I don't really need their consent. Back in the day I did, but not anymore. The glories of being 19...

My parents are by definition of the law senior citizens, so I've got REALLY old parents. My mom litterally can't change the channel on the tv. I sincerely wish I were making that up. Technology is like magic to them. So telling them that A, I work for a game development company with it's headquarters on the World Wide Web, and B, that I'm going to meet said game development company in person, will likely end badly. They will most certainly try to tell me that Jack the Ripper is among the team members and I'll end up as a scholarship fund at my old high school and/or college. And that's not much of an exaggeration either. The Jack the ripper part is obviously, but everything else? true. Kinda sad really...

Long lost brothers, perhaps? XD nah, I don't think so. But, on the upside, my parents have no idea what the term Firewall means, so I could get away with just about anything on the internet growing up. But at the same time trying to explain something to them is like talking to a brick wall. I actually tried teaching my mom how to play video games one day. BIG mistake. Biggest waste of five minutes in my life. I gave up after she kept fumbling with the controls. At least my dad can use a TV and play King's Quest... That's about the extent of his technology knowledge. He once told me, "Chris, where is the VHS for the DVR?". My response? I just stared at him for about five minutes with my jaw dropped. "Dad, do you know what DVR means? It stands for digital video recording. VHS' are so five years ago..." I'm pretty sure he's still puzzled, but he at least uses a DVR now. He just never asks me where the VHS is anymore...

My parents didn't really like me working for Phoenix in the start but now they are totally cool with it. They are actually encouraging me to go to Boston but being laid off put a cork on that plan real fast. My dad comes home asking, "how's the game coming today?"

I usually answer, "it's coming."

XD My dad knows of TSL, but he doesn't use the internet much so he really has no idea what's going on with it. I'm almost afraid to show the game to him, because he may notice my name in the credits and then start grilling me... But I stand by my decision to join the team. I feel it's one of the best decisions I've made in my life, and I don't regret one bit. Now, deciding not to tell my parents... Well, that's another matter. But I am a legal adult and have every right to make such executive decisions...

That's great! Phoenix has just made me MUCH more aware of the game development process, and I can practice a lot of my skills with Phoenix. Such as writing for the Four Winds. It was an interesting experience, and it really opened me up to a different type of writing.

My whole family, excluding myself of course, is extremely antagonistic towards video games. When I informed my family that I was working for PO, their collective reaction was a dispassionate "Oh."

My parents are totally supportive, and they did used to be very paranoid about me using my name on the internet. I lost AOL for six months when I was sixteen over it, actually (although I kind of deserved that one).

Chris, if it helps, you can point how Phoenix and TSL are also great resume builders and experience in a field you have an interest in--which is entirely true as well. People have used their experience with us to get jobs in the gaming industry, including Cesar.

Plus, dude, we're totally awesome. :)

You're more than totally awesome! POStudios is just... Indescribable, in a good way. I'm gonna hold off on telling my parents for the time being. I've got enough on my plate with finals, so when those are over, we'll see... And it is an amazing resume builder. The administration at my school is like, "Wait, you actually work for a game development company?!". Pretty cool really. Granted, I think some of the kids think I'm full of it, or just an arrogant prick. And unfortunately in this day and age of first person shooters, the kids I go to school with aren't that interested in TSL. I showed one kid a screenshot, and he said he hated the design, the art and the graphics... I tried to explain how it's all a fan game, and you guys just don't have access to the big guns like corporate juggernauts do. He still wasn't swayed. For what it's worth, he's a self-procalimed PS3 Fanboy... He actually tried to tell me that Uncharted is an adventure game... I usually fail when it comes to arguing what constitutes as a true adventure game. I tried to explain the differences between action-adventure and adventure, but he wasn't swayed... In any event, I'll do my utmost best to be in boston on the 26th. I live roughly 30 minutes outside of boston, so it's not much of a trip for me. I just gotta figure out how to get to Quincy Market... It's been a while since I've been to that part of boston...

And scratch that. Unfortunately, I just got word from my manager at GameStop (courtesy of facebook) saying he needs me the day after Christmas. So, unfortunately, I will be unable to join all of you in boston. Is there any possibility you could move the day? I mean, the day after christmas, in my opinion, is a bit of an odd choice, no offense. Some time after the new years may be better. Keep me informed!

lol! Same thing here. Granted, it could be because I'm 27 and married :P But when I told my parents, they thought it was cool.

Now, when I was in graduate school and got to meet Kelsey for the first time, I called Daddy up and was like "I'm going up to Virginia to meet up with a friend and stay a few days" (normally I ask, but I was 24 at the time and while still living on their dime at times, I figured asking would get an immediate "no"...it's all about respecting the parents when they are still paying for things). Daddy asked a few questions and was like "ok, have fun." That was MY o_0 moment!

The 26th is the only spare day Brian & his fiancee have in Boston, hence we why chose it. I know, it's not a great date for it, if there was much choice.

And it's not looking too good for this happening at this rate, either. :/ I understand, of course, but it's unfortunate.

Maybe/hopefully we can pull off something with more success for PAX :)

I'm going to hold off on pre registering for PAX East until tomorrow, when my parents are up. I want to discuss it with them. And also give them the bad news that I'm also going to be Pre-Registering for Anime Boston a month later. Man, are they gonna be pissed... But it's all worth it! That is absolutely RIDICULOUS!

There are no nameless rivers anywhere near Boston. Maybe some nameless brooks.... :P

So, now not only can I not go because of my family but I also have to work an overnight that night which means all daylight hours should be spent asleep. Except, of course, that I have to do Christmas with my family.

So if it makes you feel any better I wish I was going to be there instead of preparing for the worst day of work ever.

I'm going to be in Boston the 26th visiting relatives, but, if DarkDaventry's parents find out I may go, then he'd REALLY not be allowed, you know, with my reputation and all  :P

Although it would've been fun to crash the party just to see the faces of Katie and DD (probably the only ones who remember me) when I tell them who I am, I can't make it.  If I could, I probably would've crashed it unannounced just for the fun of it, hoping I wouldn't be banned from the restaurant ;D

Ooooh, sounds so ominous!

Long time no see, BeerNuts! And you know what? The christmas season truly is full of miracles. My manager at Gamestop did the schedule REALLY early. And guess what? I don't have work the day after Christmas after all. Apparently, he got a lot less hours than he expected to have gotten. So I'm free once again to meet you guys. Is the event still going on? I'd love to be there, and perhaps show up early. Who knows. In any event, I plan on going now!

As it didn't look like anyone was going to be available, I think it's more or less off now. :/ Sorry DD!

Drat! Right as I was able to make it, now it's off... Well, keep me informed of any future events!

My whole family, excluding myself of course, is extremely antagonistic towards video games. When I informed my family that I was working for PO, their collective reaction was a dispassionate "Oh."

My parents were pretty excited as I do software for a living and this would be a neat change in carreer.

I won't be able to make it, but that will mean more time to work on TSL.

My parents are very supportive of what I do. Well, especially since I've landed jobs in the game industry where I've made more money of what my siblings make collectively lol :)

My parents are totally supportive, and they did used to be very paranoid about me using my name on the internet. I lost AOL for six months when I was sixteen over it, actually (although I kind of deserved that one).

Oh, I wanna know!

I know ways to get people to spill information... But let's not go into that field of discussion. If I told you, I'd have to kill you...

And another twist in the tale: I apparently do have work tomorrow, but not at GameStop. I'm working at Sudbury Farms (part of the Roche Bros Supermarkets family) in the middle of a raging snowstorm... How very fun...

Yeah, the huge snowstorm we're going to get probably makes cancelling this just as well! Stay safe everyone.

Oh sure. Basically, I got AOL when I was 16 (amusing sidenote--I used to work at a local grocery store in high school which was also a Sudbury Farms, largely to pay for my AOL addiction!), and met someone who eventually my "online boyfriend" more or less. He was visiting Boston to check out some schools, we were vaguely planning to meet up finally, but when he called my house when I wasn't home and my mom answered, I got in BIG trouble because he knew enough about me to be able to find my phone number. So my AOL got axed for about six months.

We also never met, and naturally as a result of my AOL getting cancelled for that stretch, the "relationship" was over too!

W00T! Sudbury Farms! Yeah, it's probably better that the whole thing gets cancelled with the snowstorm heading in soon. It ain't looking good.

Yep. Cashier for 2.5 years. Helped that it's RIGHT across the street from the high school!

Yeah--tomorrow's plan has become sleep in, do free laundry at my parents, and get to my apartment before the storm hits!

I've been a cashier, bagger, grocery clerk, meat clerk, deli clerk, maitanence clerk, catering clerk and dairy clerk over my five years with the company. I also had roughly 3 hours of Front End Management training, but Grocery stole me for the remainder of my shift because their were short of help. But, I've networked with other stores in the company and have been able to hook myself up with some more training in new departments down the line. I just gotta talk with my old store manager to train me...

But let's get back on topic...

Well, I'm stuck in the Boston area becuase of this frigging storm cancelled all flights.  Hopefully we're going to leave tomorrow (Monday), but who really knows?

Snow is nice and all, except when it ruins your weekend.  I knew there was a reason I live in the south.

Oh man, I can imagine a 16 year old suddenly broken off from the online "better half". I'm guessing you weren't very happy at that time. And to top that, no AOL!

LOL, nah, for various reasons by the time we got to me losing AOL, I wasn't fighting it. I screwed up and I knew it.

And also, wow, definitely a good thing we cancelled! It is not sounding or looking nice outside here.

That storm was brutal. I got called in to work at Sudbury farms at 8:30 in the morning the day after Christmas. We had something like 300 customers a half hour after opening and only 3 registers of 12 open. Suffice it to say that the weathermen in new England control your grocery shopping impulses. It's a good thing you guys cancelled. Are there any more meet-ups planned in the Boston area? Im unable to go anywhere else. I can do anywhere in Massachusetts, but Im not going out of state.

I had to work an overnight price change during the blizzard. I live fifteen minutes from my job.

It took more 45 minutes to get to work at 10pm and an hour to get home at 5:30am (which was an hour early, actually, can't imagine what it would have been like at 6:30!)

I live the same distance from my job. Nothing beats the 8th grade snowstorm though. Five years ago there was a big storm in new england, and it took me about an hour and a half to get to work. A half hour to just get out of my driveway. My driveway isn't that long either. I even called up and told them I was going to be late, and they said not to bother showing up. Imagine their surprise an hour later. Granted, it was dead in there anyway. But, I got in the manager's good graces... Which I actually tend to do at every job I have... Why am I such a good worker?
