Title: Daylight Savings Time... :'(
Post by: etgadsby on April 04, 2004, 10:27:08 PM
Ok, for everybody in the United States, Canada, Mexico St. Johns, Bahamas, Turks and Caicos who has their internal clocks screwed up, it’s time (sorry for any pun) to sound off… What time do you “think” it is?

hmmm... I'm not from any of those countries but my internal clock is always screwed up ; (

... we adjusted the clock at 28 march... so it is now 9:30 AM here

I should do too when i can be bothered.  My PC keeps moving the time forward an hour and it's bugging me.

My time sense is about as good as my day/date sense... which is to say, non-existent. So an hour ahead or back is all the same to me, body/mind-wise, since I never really know what time it is anyway.

Oddly my day has gone faster…  I guess it’s an hour earlier (or later…I’m confused) then again well much of that can also be attributed to the fact that my day’s been a breakneck pain in the butt…

We went back a few weeks ago too( about two), along with the rest of the EU.
I've heard DST (in Europe) only saves 0.1 to 0.4 % at best, and that only people in France and Belgium complain to DST, because they live the most to the West of continental Europe. Anyway, since most people don't complain about DST, why not abolish it altogether? The ones who don't complain, won't complain about it being canceled either, and the ones who do complain (like me) won't complain anymore because it has been abolished. See? Everyone happy! ;B

I think folks are finally adjusting in my neck of the woods.  It’s nice because there sunlight for me to play in after work.  Now I can take a walk instead of going to the gym and hit the treadmill.  When it’s said and done I guess I like it, but getting adjusted was a pain!   :-[

My watch adjusts itself automatically. ::)
Title: Re:Daylight Savings Time... :'(
Post by: Jeysie on April 08, 2004, 04:02:54 PM
I had to adjust my watch manually... but then, the watch cost $2.50 at K-Mart and has lasted for at least 3 years so far, so I ain't complaining. ;)

'Sides, it was about time to get my watch back in sync with my computer (which is in sync with an "official" internet time server) anyway. It drifts a few minutes ahead every couple of months or so.

Peace & Luv, Liz

I've already adjusted :)

I like DST... it means the sun would come up and hour later, so I could stay up till 5am and still go to sleep before sunrise. I don't like going to sleep when there's light outside  :)
It hasn't worked till now though - I kept thinking "I have an extra hour till sunrise! I can stay up longer!" until the sun came up :P

They said on the news that DST is predicted to save about 15 million dollars in my country, and I haven't heard anyone complain about it... so they probably won't be abolishing it, if only to piss off the religious people :-\

LOL "loser" ;D  That's the first time I ever saw it being used in its proper context.  XD

Can't you get the phone unlocked?  Maybe you'll have to call the phone company and say you "forgot" the code. ;)  They'll ask for some ID of course, then they should reset it, no problem.  :)

I don't think I could unlock it, because it is not registerd (i had prepaid). I needed a new phone anyway because my old one was getting a bit.... old.

...so guess i just buy another one (which i can lose again ; ) lol, everyone is bugging me to get a new phone.

In that case I think no-one can unlock your SIM-card. And ofcourse a prepaid card isn't registered, that's why it's prepaid! 8)

I used my cellphone to tell the time when I lost my watch... the only problem was that during tests you're not allowed to have your cellphone around, and I couldn't tell how much time I had left  :S

I always wear my watch and the only time I take it off is when I go to bed.  Usually it's kept around the same place as my glasses so I never lose it in the morning either.

I would so be lost without a watch.  I hate not knowing what time it is.  :P

You even wear your watch when you're taking a shower/batch? :o
I don't have that much space left on my badside 'table' (due to the fluffly animals located and my radio alarm clock), so the watch is right beside my glasses at night (and also when I take a bath).
I've become very accustomed to using my watch to tell time, (even when there's a big clock available, like at work). So I would also be very lost. I'd keep checking my wrist, expecting to find a watch.

Heh, I was considering writing that I remove it when I have a shower as well, but I thought that was obvious.  :P  Actually, this watch says it can withstand 330 feet underwater, so technically I could if I really wanted to. ::)

I'm actually allergic to the metal in watches, so I have a clip-on watch instead. In winter I keep it clipped to my coat hood string, and the rest of the year I keep it clipped to either my belt pack, or to my belt loop when I wear jeans. There's more than enough clocks at both my house and my job, so I generally just need my watch while travelling. I take the bus everywhere, so having a watch is pretty crucial. :P

I have a pocket watch, really a regular watch with one of the bands removed. I have kind of the same problem as you, Jeysie, metal seems to irritate my skin if I wear it for a long time.

Do you mean the buses in America always run in time? In Belgium they rarely do, but you need to know which time it is ofcourse, in order to make sure you're 10 minutes ahead of the scheduled time, so you could wait upto 25 minutes after the appointed time for the bus to arrive. That's actually the timeframe in which a bus could arrive at the bus stop you're at. :-\

BTW, IIRC there's also watches in a sort of metal that isn't supposed to irritate the skin at all.

I only wish the buses here ran on time. :P Actually, it's not even that, it's the fact that they're inconsistent that's annoying as heck. I mean, if they were at least consistently late, I could still work around it.

Having a watch still is useful, though. Around my neck of the woods, the "lead time" depends on which bus you're taking, where you're getting it from, *and* even what time of the day you're taking it. :P The bus I take to and from work has about a 15 minute lead time from the closest schedule point. One bus I used to take from my old job had about a 5 minute lead going up, and about a 10 minute lead going back. Still another bus for still another job was more like 20 minutes. (I hated taking that bus, it was always hideously late. :P )

On average though, I just try to be at my pickup point at the time the bus should be reaching the nearest scheduled pickup point before where I am. Does mean having to wait around for a while, but at least I usually never miss the bus.

And it's still better than the bus in my hometown. The buses there actually were usually consistent (the bus driver to my college was consistently 10 minutes late ;) ). The schedule itself was awful, though... the most frequent buses only ran every hour, and only from 7AM to about 5PM, plus the coverage was spotty for anywhere except the major ports. Needless to say, I walked a lot as a kid.

As for the watch thing... there are some watches even that have a cloth band running under the watch metal, for instance. But I don't really care for the feel of things around my wrist, anyway. Plus I don't have to worry about my watch getting wet when I wash my hands, or having it press into my skin when I have my wrists resting on a table or that sort of thing.

Peace & Luv, Liz

The buses in this town, when I was going to high school, were usually quite consistent too (don't remember how many minutes late they were). Of I took the bus to high school I was at least half an hour early at school, and the bus home only left 30 minutes after school was ended. Also, there was only a bus every two hours, and particularly when there were exams that was really annoying. Needless to say I soon discovered the joy of using my bike to traverse the 9 kms to and 9 kms from. :D

Post by: Jeysie on April 10, 2004, 04:09:01 PM
That reminds me of my last few months of high school... I had detention up to my neck from all the classes I had skipped, and had been put in a foster home for my truancy to boot, one that was some distance from the school. You're not allowed to take the "late bus" if you have detention, and I got out of detention just as the younger kids at my foster home were getting out of school, so they had priority for getting a ride home (since I think they were out of free busing range or something). So I ended up walking from my school to the foster home 40 minutes every day, since there was no suitable public bus at the proper time, and I had no money anyway.

Then there was the time where I had a job where I also had to walk 40 minutes to and from because it was a 6PM to midnight shift when the buses had long since stopped running, and my mom couldn't drive me because she needed to get up at 4AM each day. And I worked there during the winter months, too. :P

I actually usually don't mind walking... anything up to an hour is fair game to me. But I hate walking at night, or in the cold. That's the only part of my trip to NYC I didn't really like... I literally spent almost a day total walking, all of it in the cold, and some of it at night. :P

I don't mind walking either. I don't mind riding the bike as long as there's not many elevations up and down. The down-ones are nice, but the up-ones are not. If I'm not in a big city, or another place that can be unsafe at night, I don't mind walking at that time. As long as I don't have to stay out in the cold, and I have sufficient body protection for the cold, I see no problem either. However, rain is never nice walking or riding your bike in. My maximum for riding a bike is also about an hour, so I could never make the +40km-trip to work in that time.

Hee. I'm weird in that, if it's not too cold and I don't have to be anywhere important (i.e., I'm heading home), I like walking in the rain, even without an umbrella. There's something oddly soothing about the water running down over me. Maybe it's just that rain suits my general state of mind. (Plus I love the water, anyway.)

The sun doesn't have to shine, but rain is taking it a bit too far in the other direction, for me. I don't mind the rain, as long as I don't have to be in it. XD Since I can't properly swim (I lack the technique, and my endurance has always been extremely low) I have a natural dislike of large quantities of water. :-X
It's just in the liquid state I don't like water though, and in the completely frozen state. In the half-frozen state (snow) I love it. ;D

I'm now going to do something very unusual and that's getting back on topic but I just thought of something else to counter this cursed DST-problem. It might not work for everyone, but it's just a thought.
See, one of the 'advantages' of DST is longer evenings. However, if you start the day (i.e. work) one hour earlier, you end it one hour earlier, and you still have the same period of evening left. 8)

The ones that like the advantages of DST, can shift their day-routine one hour, while the ones that don't can stick to their former routine. Even now, I start work one hour later than the rest, and go home one hour later, so why should such a thing confuse people?

Provided that their boss/circumstances allow them to. Most people I know can't just decide to come to work one hour later and leave an hour later :-\

I don't come in an hour late, I come in at the end of our 'sliding start'work-time and stop at almost the end of our 'sliding stop'work-time. We can start work anytime between 08.00 and 09.15 AM, and we can stop work anytime between 4.00 and 6.00 PM. It is possible to start working before 8 AM and after 6 PM, if you have authorization from your departmant manager or other special duties to perform. Ofcourse, we have to work 38 hours/week but apart from that, we can schedule our daily work-rhythm(?sp) to our liking. 8)

Sweet!  I had a job with flex-hours last summer and it was really great.  Later on, I made it the same times everyday, but it was kewl because if I wanted to take a day off, I could adjust the other days accordingly.

This summer I'll be lucky if I can even find a job. :-\

Technically speaking, I think it'd be possible to squeeze a day off from our flex hours, if you come in at the beginning of our start-flex and go home at the end of our stop-flex. Nobody in our company does that though, and certainly not me. To start at the beginning of the start-flew I'd have to get up much earlier and due to the fact I'm an evening person, I can't go to bed too soon, so I'd have too little hours of solid sleep and that's not a good idea. :-\

I wouldn't despair too soon, Yonkey. After graduating I was also about two years unemployed until I found my current job. And I want to tell you my current job was worth the wait, certainly the colleagues. :D
