A KQ game starring...Saladin. I always found him to be an interesting character, and would love to play through an adventure with him.
And after playing TSL, the description of the statue of Saladin's ancestor in the castle halls (describing how he rose to become the first dog to serve as guard), I was thinking of what an interesting story could be made out of that.
Now obviously that's not going to happen, but I thought the next best thing could be a section in TSL as Saladin. I've always had an inkling that TSL would, at some point, include a playable section as each member of the family (whether I'm right on this is obviously yet to be seen), but a section as Saladin could be very interesting indeed.
I realise that at this point it's probably far too late to add something like that in even the last chapter, but it's worth the shot.
There were originally plans do have sections playing with different characters but unfortunately these were cut when the game was trimmed down to a more manageable size.
I have always loved Saladin though, so cool idea!
*Ponders working on a Saladin FPS*
Sorry to sound like a n00b, but what a FPS? ???
First-Person Shooter (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/First-person_shooter).
What an interesting idea! I too think Saladin is a great character (though he isn't developed much); additionally, I think the original voice actor from KQVI has since died. But anyways, it's still a cool idea.
Haids, FPS stands for first-person shooter.
duke - Pretty much what I thought. Ah wells.
No like FPS's. Never been a fan.
QuoteI too think Saladin is a great character (though he isn't developed much)
One of the big reasons I'd like to see him star in a game.

Indeed; Tony Jay passed away in 2006. I was incredibly sad when I found out; he was incredibly talented and had a wonderful voice. I loved him as Saladin and the Gate.
Thank you for clearing that up for me, boys. I actually really don't like first-person shooters, either. But if Captain Salidan starred in one I might reconsider.
I could actually see him in a Zelda-esque style game.

Yeah, you'd also have to make up some elaborate reason as to how guns suddenly appeared in the Green Isles out of nowhere...Or I suppose you could have an FPS with a bow and arrow...Nah, that'd be lame. Plus, I can't imagine Saladin shooting people up.
An RPG/Adventure approach could be cool though. What would Saladin be doing in this game, Arix? What would be the reason and object of his quest?
As I said earlier, an adventure based around Saladin's ancestor rising to become the first dog of the royal guard could be intriguing.
Right, but what would that actually mean in terms of adventures? What would he have to do to become the first guard dog? Fight some great evil?
That would be the traditional thing to do, but it also feels a bit overdone. It would definitely work, but I'd prefer something a bit more original.
...Like?
Ever read Dragon Outcast? Cause I'm thinking something like that.
Never heard of it.
The main character, a copper dragon, is cast out from his family. Running away from them, he comes across the Lavadome, an underground community of dragons. He's adopted by the Tyr (king/emperor/whatever), and eventually becomes Tyr himself by uncovering a conspiracy among the community to overthrow the Tyr.
I'm thinking something along those lines (but less dramatic, of course).

You could always do what Demon Hunter did and have dual crossbows (http://www.cad-comic.com/cad/20101025). ;)
I all honesty, I can't see Saladin as much of an archer. He always seemed like more of a melee fighter to me.
Agreed. Plus, lacking opposable digits, he'd have a hard time handling a crossbow. He does carry a sword in KQVI, I believe.
Yup. Two scenes in particular stick out - at the start, when Alexander's talking to Alhazred, Saladin has his sword part-drawn for the whole conversation, and noticeably sheaths it at the end. Then at the wedding, when the genie disguised as the princess orders him to execute Alexander, he begins to draw his sword. He then fights the genie with his sword when the genie is unmasked.

Huh? How do you think he holds the sword, then? All of the guard dogs have human-style hands.
Ah, you got me there.
Do I got you so you don't know what you're doing? ;)
If someone wants to design the sprite sheet and a tile map for the buildings I could plug it into already existing code of mine and show you what it would look like.
There's FPS that don't involve shooting too much -- have you played Heretic or Thor's Hammer (I'm definitely dating myself with that one :P)? Those had melee combat.
Seems like it would bastardize Saladin somewhat to take a well liked adventure character and put him in a first person hack and slash. Mask of Eternity, anyone. :P
"a person born of parents not married to each other" - ize
Ohhhhh. Thank you, Doon.

FPS = first-person sworder?

Well in Heretic I think it's a staff and in Thor's Hammer I believe you can use either a hammer or an axe. Obvi, I preferred the hammer. Cause of how it's named after a hammer. :P
Speaking of fantasy FPS's, anyone remember Project Offset?

So what you're saying is that you're worried that the Kings Quest series...
*puts on sunglasses*
...will go to the dogs.

Very well done. Returning to the forums in style, I see.
This forum needs a Like button. ^_^
Y'know, you're not the first one to say that... :)
Yeah, I was pretty sure I've seen someone else say that somewhere.
Is it such a crazy idea, really? I bet that they could somehow link Facebook here! :D
Haha, that'd be awesome. Let's do it! :D
You know a game I would like to play is a game where you get to play as Sir Roderick Ponce Von Fontlebottom the Magificent b****** (yep you censored this) from Jade Empire... I totally enjoy hearing John Cleese crack wisecracks and being a smartass for an entire hack and slash rpg.
He should be a playable side character in Jade Empire 2, LOL.
I stand by what I said. I'm committed to make your game, but I'm no artist. Also someone needs to come up with some good story and dialogue. This I can do, but I like to focus on the coding.
EDIT: Okay I was thinking about it: Why is nobody else stepping up, I said to myself. Being that it would be a fan game and knowing the trouble Phoenix had, we might need to change a few names and other things for legal purposes. ;) But that we can make a decent demo anyhow.
