Well it looks like my idea didn't really work...the voting's more of a proverbial pissing contest than any kind of judgement on the characters themselves.

Yes I am bitter ;)

While I don't think it be a pissin' test, there seems to be something vastly amiss with two having 38 votes a piece, and a scattering of others having between 3 to 8 votes.

That would mean that more than 80 users have voted on this here poll... and I don't mean no foul or harm to the fine crew of KQ9, for they sail a tight ship - but it doesn't even seem that there are 80 regular posters! (While the membership numbers well over 80... I don't usually see 80 different people who swing by the forum... more so to vote on this contest)! :)

But the crew of KQ9 be sharp ones! Eyes like seagulls, they have! And if there be cheatin' aboard this here ship, they're sure to capture them and cut off their hands for the vile act!

Onwards and forward, I say!

Love the character, Tawmis. ;D Anyway I wasn't really thinking about cheating seeing as how Yonkey would catch that kind of thing. What I was referencing was the fact that both Bolas and Cassipoia are like getting people to vote for them who have no idea what the contest is about and who have no real opinions. I made the pissing contest remark because it's more about who can recruit more people than whose character is better which is the whole idea of the contest.

This isn't meant to condemn anyone, personally I find all the finalists to be kick ass characters.

Yonkey

Yeah, considering there's no cheating going on this time, it seems like both Sir Bolas and Cassiopia are equally matched. 8)

But remember, the poll doesn't close until I say so, and I'm expecting a lot more people to be voting in the next few weeks. ;D

Oh wow...we've got several more weeks before it's closed!

But wouldn't that be a 'popularity contest'? ???
'Pissing contest' is more of an immature display of masculinity/prowess, IIRC :-\

sivvrianBARRY

Not really a popularity contest because I COULD get tons of people to vote on it if I wanted to but I didn't tell anyone I know about this because I wanted it to be legit.

Storm

With all due respect, that's proof by negation. You should be explaining why it IS a pissing contest, rather then why it isn't a popularity contest :P

Besides, wasn't it your point that contestants recruiting people to vote for them turn this into a pissing/popularity contest? ???

LOL you're turning this into like a big debate. ;)

Anyway perhaps it isn't a pissing contest. I was trying to find a term that fit it well and I thought that fit it best although I can't really think of what I'm actually trying to say. Which is why I disproved the popularity contest term but didn't prove the pissing contest because I'm still searching for the word. :)

I guess what I'm trying to get across is that all of the efforts that are being put forth to recruit people turn this aspect of the contest into something that's not really fun but is more like a pointless excersize.

I'm not really sure what you meant by your second sentence, but hopefully I explained it adequately.

By the way I mean no offense to Bolas or Cassiopia as your efforts in the previous two rounds and probably the third round are awesome.

Hey, a girl's gotta raise her postcount SOMEHOW ;)

I get your point (I think) - if the contestants go around asking people to register only to vote for them, winning the contest turns into a function of how big their circle of surfing friends/family is, rather then who's characters the forumers like best.
I still think that qualifies as a popularity contest though, because the winner is the one who is most popular (ie. can enlist the most people to vote for him strictly because it's him, regardless of his actual achievements).

sivvrianBARRY

You still are missing my point Storm (and your post count is still rising ;)).

Tawmis, Kimmie or I could have just as large of a circle of family and friends as the other entrants, or even bigger, but that is not reflected in the contest because we did not ask them to do anything.

So popularity is not what's reflected in the contest. It's...well I don't really know.

Rosedragon

We must keep the contest fair.  :)  If Bolas and Cassiopeia are getting friends and family to log on just to vote for them, I would say that' make it more of a popularity contest. But I don't really see it as cheating as long as each person votes only once. People who vote should have a good idea about the game and what the contest is for. I voted for Cassiopeia because I thought her costume was prettiest, and I liked what she had to say in her story of her character. May the best character win! Then again, they are all awesome and creative characters, everyone did a good job.

It's definitely fair to get your family and friends to vote for you. I'm just not so sure that there's a point to the fan voting if like 80% of the people voting are not active posters and have shown no interest towards KQ9. It's fair, but it doesn't really reflect the quality of the characters being voted on, which WAS the point of the voting.

OK, I have finished my bitter ranting.

I agree, that's actually why I didn't send out an e-mail to the 1100+ KQ9 Newsletter subscribers, or promote the voting on other sites.  Had I done that, yes it would have been a larger unbiased sample of people, but then the nature of the voting would be questionable.  People that haven't been following the contest, or even KQ9 would cast votes and base their decision on who knows what. :S

I didn't really expect people to get 40 of their closest friends to vote for them, but they're completely free to do so, especially since it's now impossible to register multiple accounts & cheat. :P  It may look a popularity contest right now, but that should change soon. 8)

Also, keep in mind that this poll doesn't determine the overall contest winner.  It just represents one Director's vote in the actual voting process.
"A wish changes nothing. A decision changes everything."

sivvrianBARRY

Yep I still remember Yonkey. ;D

The whole reason I suggested this idea was because it would make the contest more fun and exciting in between announcements of who wins. That's why I'm kinda bummed out because it didn't turn out to be too fun.

I am intrigued by your statement that it should change soon.  :o

OK now I'm really done as I don't want to negatively influence the directors with all of my moaning lol.

Kimmie

QuoteTawmis, Kimmie or I could have just as large of a circle of family and friends

i dont hav any friends, and im an orphan/alien as i dont fit in with my family...ok maybe i lie!  :P

i can see every1's point, but in the end we shall let fate decide...fate being majorly down to the kq9 rulers  ;)
come on guys, this is meant to be fuuuuuun  ;D

I be tellin' some of me crew about this here contest, lads and ladies! But I also made a point to tell'em to vote, not for me, but for who they think should be winnin' this fine contest we be havin'!

http://www.neverendingnights.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=114

Those be the two places I be advertisin' - but again, makin' it clear to vote for who they be thinkin' should win.

Perhaps that was my error! Should've told'em to be votin' for me or make'em walk the plank! :)

Tawmis

An' for my own 2 cents...

Popularity Contest = People who know about the contest already, and vote for who they think is the most popular person.

Pissing Contest = Oh you got 3 votes? And I have 3 votes? Time for me to recruit more people, and make them vote for me!

Popularity Contest usually doesn't have any form of a "recruitment" drive. It's usually: Here's three names, vote on who you think is most popular. A Pissing Contest is: Here's three names, now you three people go out and try to recruit as many people as you can to vote for you.
