Jason, I think you missed something.  I TOOK a class last semester where we read and studied LoTR and HP...so, yeah, not only have I read the books about five times...I MAY know more than the average person about the books!  <---note: I said "may" and "average"

awwwww....only 5 times??   ;P ...that's how often i have read the simarillion  ;-D and i read LotR many times more  ; ) ...never read hp though

Let me clarify a little further.  LoTR I've only read twice...HP, each of the books, I've probably read 5 times at least...Never read LoTR until after the second movie came out.

I'd heard of it several years before the movies came out, but I never really wanted to read it. I've generally never liked fantasy that much with a very few exceptions, I'm more a straight science fiction fan. (As everyone gasps in utter horror. ;) ) I did read The Hobbit as a young 'un, though.

But a few months before the first movie came out, when the news first came out there would be movies, I caved in and read the books. I've only read them the once, because honestly, it was hard enough wading though Tolkien's writing style the first time. (Now I'm REALLY going to get flogged, I bet. ;) )

There is a mildly funny story that goes with that, though. When I went to buy the books, I couldn't find them displayed in the spot I'd expected (in the SF/Fantasy under "Tolkein", obviously). So, feeling a little foolish but stymied nonetheless, I asked the clerk at the counter if they had a copy of the books available.

He led me over to the special display they had set up in anticipation of the movie (which is why I hadn't been able to find the books :P ), and asked me, and I paraphrase-quote (to the best of my memory, that is) "Do you want the paperback, the "softcover", the hardcover, the annotated hardcover, or the annotated hardcover with appendix, professional artwork sketches and scenes, and goldleaf-trimmed pages?" (I kid you not, that last (or at least the gist of it, I distinctly remember the artwork and gold trim bits) was one of the options!)

I gave him a slightly bemused look, and said good-naturedly, "I'll, er, take the paperbacks. I want to READ the books, not frame them in a museum!" He laughed and said, "Yeah, I don't blame you, it seems a little much to me, too."

i have the simarillion, the hobbit and lotr in english and dutch, they are all paperbacks for the same reason as you. my dad has a 'luxe' version though  ;-D

lol...too funny Jeysie!

Well, my sister has the 3-in-1 volume with the appendixes in the back.  I have the softcover individual ones with the movie pics on the front.  I must admit that the first time I read RoTK, I had to force myself to read about the last half of it.  I thought it was SO boring!  However, in my Fant. Lit. class, my professor told us that the last part (the Shire part) is probably the most important because it shows us how much all the hobbits had grown throughout their journey...*shrugs* If he says so...he knows more about it than I do!

Hee. I actually ended up with paperbacks of the first two, and a "softcover" of the third, because that's all they had left of the third one. (I dunno what the technical term is, but basically a version that's the same size as a typical hardcover, but has a cover and binding like a paperback instead.)

I've never been big on collecting as its own purpose... to me the main value of an object is in its use, rather than its looks or solely the possession thereof. So I'm generally not fussy about getting "collector's editions" or "rare editions" or whatever of books unless the additions would add something to the story that I felt was equivalent to the extra cost.

I might have been tempted to get the "deluxe" version he mentioned for the artwork... but not at the $70 price listed for it!

At any rate, my next goal is to finally read all the Narnia books before the movies come out. ;) (So far I've only read The Lion, the Witch, and the Warddrobe, and Prince Caspian.)

Peace & Luv, Liz

Yeah, I need to read Narnia too...We used to have all the books at our house, but they disappeared one by one...now we only have Prince Caspian left.  *decides to hunt down the books in the near future*

You know...I was the opposite way.  I skipped all the parts about Aragorn and such and just read just the parts about Frodo and Sam the first time through :)
