Appreciate it, Jeysie.  As of right now, everything is working well.  The weird thing is, I don't just download anything...in fact, it is rare when I DO download.  But I'm still holding my breath, right now.

BTW, after I did the system restore, I lost MSN Plus.  Went to download it again, and one of the images that came up right before I started the download was the toolbar that may not have caused a problem, but it occured at the same time.  Then as I read that statement that we had to agree to in order to download it...and it mentioned icons appearing.  I don't know if anyone else has had trouble with it after getting Plus...but I decided I wasn't going to install it.  I'm going to stick with MSN 6.2.  Not saying that was the problem...but I felt like there were a couple things that just looked a little too similar for me to feel comfortable :P

You can opt out of the sponsor when installing MSN Plus. :P

How?  I didn't see that option!  Granted, I may not have gone far enough b/c I chickened out the second time :P

When you install it, one of the screens talks about the sponsor and there's a checkbox to install it.  Just uncheck it. XD

How did I miss that?  Ok...I feel completely computer illiterate right now.  :-\

But I still think I'll wait a little while and see how my computer runs before I do anything else.

LOL I do that too, but if some program has the option to not install their adware/spyware crap, I always opt-out of it.  8)

I thought I HAD clicked the stuff off...but that must've been when I had installed Mozilla.  Oh well...they like to be tricky, don't they?

I only come across those kinds of checkboxes seomtimes when I have to subscribe to something and have to leave an e-mail address (which is, ofcourse, a spammotel-one specifically for that site) there's a box to 'receive promotional messages'. No promotional messages for me, so I always make sure that box is unchecked (or checked to indicate I don't want it but I think I've not seen that kind of reverse psychology yet). ATM I'm running the built-in firewall, there's a firewall in my router, I've got no AV-program and I'm surfing using Firefox (and sometimes Konqueror, to see if a site that doesn't work in FF does work in Konqueror, which is hardly ever the case.).
On the other side, if I choose 'XP Home' in my boot manager, I've got an AV-program, I've got ZoneAlarm's firewall, I don't have SP2, and I surf using FF, Mozilla or IE (for one specific site that relies on ActiveX and the other browsers seem to lack the ability to implement it the way m$ meant it to and also the firewall on the router is always present. Also, no e-mail is received or sent whilst I'm using XP. 8)

Cat, what are your ideas for a secure machine after you fix it?

...I guess it would be one without network connection (also internet) and no drives or other means to put something on your comp

...actually a really safe computer is one that is cut of his power supply and is locked away in a secured vault  ::) :P

I still prefer Linux. When System Restore doesn't work anymore, Linux is by far superior on handling your previous user-data (and even some programs).
Anyway, I hope Cat's computer keeps running fine and secure (enough). 8)

I somehow doubt Cat's willing to TRY Linux, much less use it has her main OS. :-\

koko_99_2001

Well, since I'm not sure what Linux is...I think I'll stay away from it :P (I know, I know...there's a thread about it...but it all went over my head)
