Er, I can help her without crashing her PC. Whenever you want to do a defrag:

1. Close everything.
2. Press Control-Alt-Delete
3. Highlight and "End Task" everything EXCEPT "Explorer".
4. Run Defrag.

You're obviously going to want to reboot once the defrag is finished.

Disabling your virus scanner while defragging really helps too.

Jeysie, you're braver than I am. I wouldn't tell ANYONE to do that, even though I sometimes do it myself.

*shrug* TECHNICALLY it wont cause any problems. In reality, it might cause the computer to shut down (but nothing would be permamently damaged)

(shrug) I've always done that before defragging myself... never caused me any problems or any unexpected shut downs.

Sometimes if Windows is acting wonky but I don't want to reboot, I'll kill all my TSRs, end-task Explorer to refresh things a bit, then restart my TSRs. Don't recommend the average person bothering to do that, though.

Thanks you guys.  I think I've tried closing everything out before and it still gets stuck.  But I'll try again.  And never thought about disabling my virus scanner.
