Quote from: racx_00 on October 30, 2004, 09:37:08 PMSounds annoying Bob :-\, having to switch between XP and Linux :-\
It wouldn't have been a problem for me had Adobe Reader 6 been installed on my work laptop. AFAIK it fulfills the requirements, but I could not install it before, and since they (ICT) fiddled with it, I can do even less, so I had little choice. And yes, the switching is annoying, because when I want to run XP, I have to wait for the boot manager to appear, because XP is second, (Linux is first ofcourse), and when I try to do something internet-related, XP (home) takes ages to start that part up, even after it's finished all else. :furious: When was the last time I mentioned my attitude towards XP Home? :stabs:

Most of the time, the class is fun.  Plus, I already dropped one class this year.  I can't drop two.

Stuff to b**** about...

(lots of stuff that violates a few forum rules)

Racx doing badly in school. I can speak from personal experience that not getting good grades and a diploma in school is a guaranteed way to have crappy low-pay no-benefit jobs for the rest of your life.

Speaking of crappy jobs... OK. Last month when we did the monthly statements to our customers, I concentrated on getting them mailed out as soon as I got them. By doing this, all my usual weekly work got backed up. I then got griped at because the weekly work didn't get done timely enough.

So this month I worked on getting the weekly stuff done first. I then came in today and got griped at because I didn't get the statements mailed out soon enough. (Never mind that every other month the statements weren't even *printed* yet on the 5th, let alone mailed.)

MAKE UP YOUR @$#%#^!! MINDS PEOPLE!!

I sympathise. Some people just don't seem to be able to realize you can only do so much in a certain amount of time. :-\ And yes, in that case it's soon forgotten that it has been even worse.

I'd like to b**** at myself today.

At my job we often do price quotes for people on various products, and part of my job is to type up quotes into e-mails to send to customers.

In an attempt to make things go a little clearer, my boss had me make a worksheet that she could fill out with all the pertinent info. So I dutifully mocked one up and printed it out for her to use.

Today I get a bunch of quotes with the worksheets all nice and filled out, and realized that in the part where all the product info goes I FORGOT TO PUT A "PRICE" INPUT COLUMN. FOR A PRICE QUOTE WORKSHEET.

(paints the word LOSER on her forehead)

Look at it this way Racx... no matter how much you hate school, going to school and doing well now means it'll be far, far less likely that you'll get stuck with a job you hate later. Going to school lasts ~12 years at the minimum... but you'll need to work for ~40 years.

So far I've spent 8 years regretting dropping out of school, and have, by current life expectancy calculations, another 50 years to go. (At the rate we're going, Social Security will be useless by time I'm old enough to retire, so I'll have to work until I drop.)

Sorry Jeysie.  I have to agree with Jason.  School sucks.  I hate it.  It's boring, it's repetitive and I'm NOT learning anything I'll need later in life!!

The whole point of high school is to get good grades and a base foundation of learning so you can get into college. Then in college the real learning begins, so you can train in a field that interests you and have a better chance get a real job that pays real money, real benefits, and real work. I find I can't get a lot of jobs because they all require degrees.

I'd love to be able to go back to school, so I can finally get a job that doesn't suck. Unfortunately I'd need to take remedial courses just to qualify for basic stuff at a community college, then I'd have to do really good there to qualify for a "real" college so I could then finally work on a degree. That's assuming I could pay for all of that, which I can't, because all the jobs I currently can get pay near-minimum wage, which isn't even enough to afford to live on my own without a generous roommate, let alone pay for college.

Once you get down the road of dropping out of school, it's hard to get back on track once you realize it was a bad idea, unless you're really lucky or you don't mind spending twice as long and twice as much as you would have if you'd done it right the first time.

Math is more important than you think. I use a fair amount of math in my job, and I have just a simple, sucky paperwork-processing job. Math is *especially* important if you want to get into IT stuff, Racx... computer science involves some *crazy* math stuff.

English is also very important. Knowing how to express yourself in a formal and accurate manner in speech and writing is an absolute must for the working world. I once got a job literally because I was the person who wrote the most coherent and well-written resume, even though I wasn't necessarily the one with the best skills.

But I guess some people just have to learn that certain decisions are a bad idea on their own, even when someone who's already gone through it tries to save them the anguish. I hope you have better luck than I did...

I'm not advocating dropping out, but unfortunately, the useless crap doesn't stop after high school, it continues into college/university.  There were so many courses I had to take that did not relate to my field whatsoever and accordingly I did horribly in them. :P  I actually still don't even see why there are so many ridiculous math courses in Computer Science when in reality, the only math you do is basic arithmetic.  I can understand having to know high school math, since basic algebra is important for programming.  But as far as really complex things go, the majority of the time it's a computer doing all the complex calculations, not you.

I guess school tries to give you a basic foundation for everything, and then once you know what you want to do, you specialize from that basic foundation.  Still, getting to that point is definitely not easy, and once you do get there, finding a decent job that makes use of what you've learned is a whole different problem altogether.  :-\

The first year of college was a mish-mash of different courses, because they only split it up into specialized courses the 2nd year, so yes, that year there were a lot of courses I didn't really excel at, but were not exactly required in the specialisation I was going to flollow.

The only reason why I can't put some stuff I learnt there into practise, is because our company is a big one, so we have to specialize. But if I were to have the same occupation in a small company, I'd have to have to know about most of the courses I had in those last 2 years of college (it was a 3-year degree). 8)
