I agree with that statement.  The last two years of my degree (it's a 4 year program) contain courses that I'd be most likely use in industry.  As for the rest of them...  ::)

Oops, sorry, I forgot that the terms college and university aren't interchangable outside the US. :P

And that depends... what is TAFE? Is it some sort of vocational school? ???

And all of the IT jobs/degrees I've personally looked into around here need(ed) advanced math courses (which is why I'll never be able to get into them... was never good at much beyond advanced algebra and geometry, and I don't even remember most of that any more...)... the only ones that don't are the repair job-type ones. I guess it's different then outside the US?

I guess I should say that around here you can only get degrees from high school and college/university. There are some high schools that focus more on training for specific careers, like business and vocational high schools, but it's still high school. Even then, you're still at a disadvantage here unless you get college degree. Almost every job outside of retail work in the US needs a degree... even things like factory labor jobs need at least certs from college-esque training programs. At the very least, the person with the degree is more likely to get the nod. :P

When I use 'college' it's probably not the same as the US's college either. I consider it as not being a university but 'catering'' the same age group (18-21/24). And nowadays, with all of this Bachelor and Master talk it looks as if they're going to give the same courses too.

Flash-back! Yes, I believe that question has been asked before, but I'm not good at information finding, so if you want to see, you'll have to find it yourself.

If you've got a high-school (12-18 years) degree, there's still quite a lot of jobs you can apply for here. Ofcourse, if you don't even have that... :-\

TAFE = Technical And Further Education, and I don't think we (here in Flanders) have anything of the sorts.
BTW, I got this from Google, so Google away if you want to find out more. :scholar:

The meanings of college you'd hear in the US.

Quote
1. An institution of higher learning that grants the bachelor's degree in liberal arts or science or both.

Quote
2. An undergraduate division or school of a university offering courses and granting degrees in a particular field.

Quote
3. A school, sometimes but not always a university, offering special instruction in professional or technical subjects.

In other words, after getting thru highschool in the US, going to college is considered the next step in education. :P

Over here u have two types of schools.......

Public schools are for kids who's parents arent rich (majority go here)

rivate schools are for the rich people and the students have more options and freedom than public schools.  >:( Makes uni life a whole lot easier.....

Speaking as someone who went to a private school, that's not entirely true. Although, mine was a comparatively cheap one.

It depends on what kind you go to. Mine was conservative Christian, and I definately did not have more freedom than I did when I went to a public school. And it doesn't always mean you parents are rich, it depends on just how expensive and elite the school is. But I do agree that in a lot of ways it much harder for public school students.

As for university . . . there is some correlation. If your parents are rich enough to send you to an elite school, they're probably rich enough to buy your way into uni, especially now admission is leaning toward your ability to pay up-front fees rather than your academic merit. However, it doesn't have a *lot* to do with public/private school. As I've said, I went to private school, and couldn't get in based on wealth. I got in on academic merit and am going to be graduating with one heck of a HECS debt >:(.

Just MHO  :scholar:

By freedom I kinda meant resources. Students having access to more subjects.

Anyway, we have just the college and the university overhere. No private schools (I know of).
