I got this in my e-mail, and I thought some people might be interested. Lovecraft created the original Abdul Alhazred - the author of the Necronomicon.

So what if I am, huh? Anyways, I work better when I'm drunk. It makes me fearless! If I see a bad guy, I'll just point my sword at him and saaaaaaaaaay, "Hey! Bad guy! You're not s'posed to be here! Go home or I'll stick you with my sword 'til you go, 'Ouch! I'm dead!' Ah-ha-ha!" Ha-ha. *hic* See? Ain't no one gonna be messin' wit' ol', Benny!

As far as I know Lovecraft has been dead a long time, his stories are public domain... Most if not all are accessable through project gutenberg...
Well, ya, King's Quest is on Earth. Daventry is very old city from a long time ago. It's in ruins now and people aren't quite sure exactly where it used to be. There are some archaeologists searching through the ruins, they think they know its Daventry. But its somewhere on Earth."-Roberta Williams http://kingsquest.wikia.com/wiki/File:Daventryisearth.ogg

Copyrights don't die with the author, though. But if everything is old enough to be public domain, okay.

Copyrights are something like death of the author + 70ish years or so, as I recall. He may have never actually copyrighted the works though... not every author did back then. He was into allowing friends write in his universe. All I really know on the subject is that all or most of his books are public domain.

Nowadays everything a person writes is automatically copyrighted the moment they write it. I'm not sure if it applied back then, but I'd suspect so.

In any case, copyright expires 70 years after the author's death. Lovecraft died in 1937 (in January/February, I think) which means his stories became public domain in 2007 ;D
