Well I noticed that Square Enix has some of their RPGS for sale this weekend. 49-53% off. STuff like Chaos Rings, Final Fantasy, Final Fantasy 2, and Secret of Mana. They made one game, 'Sliding Hero" free for the weekend.

I picked up Secret of Mana and Chaos Rings for $3.99, and $5.99... Probably the best deal I'll ever get out of Square on the appstore... I don't expect them to drop to $0.99 like some companies do. ...and their games are probably some of the most expensive on the app store.

I haven't decided to pick up FF1 and FF2 though, not sure its worth it, since I own both the PSX and GBA versions of those games... It's more a less a port of the PSP versions of the games... But i'm not sure if those versions included any bonuses over the GBA version (other than some graphics and special effects added)? Is there anything else worth owning those versions for?

GBA version had the extra dungeons, but I suspect PSP/Iphone version has that as well?

Also it comes down to would it be better to play on a PSP (from the PlayStation Store), and have better controls... or improved retina display graphics?
Well, ya, King's Quest is on Earth. Daventry is very old city from a long time ago. It's in ruins now and people aren't quite sure exactly where it used to be. There are some archaeologists searching through the ruins, they think they know its Daventry. But its somewhere on Earth."-Roberta Williams http://kingsquest.wikia.com/wiki/File:Daventryisearth.ogg

Both I and II have bonus dungeons ON TOP of the ones included in GBA versions. If it's as convenient for you to play on the PSP as it is on iPhone, I'd suggest getting the PSN releases due to more comfortable controls. Besides, the first two FFs were not really made with retina display in mind (they still look lovely, though).

Now, III is another matter entirely. It looks infinitely better than the DS version and is not available on PSP. The price may seem insane compared to other App Store titles, but it's still a bargain when put next to the more expensive, yet technically inferior DS release.

Oh, I'll wait on III. It'll get a price drop someday. I'm patient. I already own the DS version.  I understand the Iphone version lost the FMV introduction though, unfortunately.  Some reviews claim maybe some of the animation fro t the DS release. But ya, it does look much nicer!

But thanks for the advice. So PSP/Iphone versions has even more extra dungeons? Cool!

I'll check PSP store price, and weigh that into my decision!.

FF1 is actually one of my top favorites in the series.

I'm not particularly a fan of FF2, due to the combat system (it's one I haven't completed yet), so this might be the time to do it.

Now, if they'd just port the Wonderswan Color version of FF3 (closer to the non-NA released NES original), and Final Fantasy Legend (SaGA) remake... I'd love to play it with the 2-d graphics!

The mechanics, while simple in concept, are indeed quite confusing and prone to abuse. However, I personally love the story, which is every bit as dramatic as those of the later games, but less convoluted. I'm sure you'll enjoy it as well.

Actually, the Wonderswan version of FF3 was canceled. Apparently, the game proved so difficult to port due to the way its coded that Square Enix eventually gave up and remade the game from scratch. That's why III can only be played on NES, DS and now iPhone/iPod while every other 2D Final Fantasy game is available for bazillion platforms.

But as I understand it the Wonderswan version was finished or nearly finished. I want to play a version of the game with those assets. I'm not as big a fan of the 3D remakes. I like GBA FF4 more than the DS version.

I don't understand how porting it was difficult considering the first two were potted over to the PSX. Edit: oh you meant porting it to Wonderswan.

Hmm so been playing secret of Mana, I'm not sure but I think they might have cut some of the main characters animation, his walk animation seems to only be two frames and looks a little awkward from what I can remember.
