Altered Destiny?

Ah Altered destiny, I tried playing that one time, but there was a weird floating platform bug and I couldn't progress.

Just getting the obvious wrong answer out of the way:

King Quest VII

Enchantermon

It's not King's Quest VI, is it?
So what if I am, huh? Anyways, I work better when I'm drunk. It makes me fearless! If I see a bad guy, I'll just point my sword at him and saaaaaaaaaay, "Hey! Bad guy! You're not s'posed to be here! Go home or I'll stick you with my sword 'til you go, 'Ouch! I'm dead!' Ah-ha-ha!" Ha-ha. *hic* See? Ain't no one gonna be messin' wit' ol', Benny!

Yes, it is King's Quest VI.

For all y'all's info, the Chinese folktale in question is 'Ma Liang and the Magic Paintbrush'; the four kings are ... wait a minute, Lore Azure is just a lord, but I always thought of him as a king, but King Calliphitm, King Graham, and King Alexander are definitely kings; the deadly plants are the vines, the nightshade, and the mint.

Enchantermon

Ah, the mint! I didn't think of it as a deadly plant, but indeed it is, to the genie.
I didn't think you would count Lord Azure, though. I was thinking the fourth would be Samhain (since the Land of the Dead isn't governed by the Crown as the Isle of the Sacred Mountain is). And I had no idea of the story of the Magic Paintbrush.

Okay, I'll come up with something as soon as I can. :)

I first heard of the Magic Paintbrush from the 90s' TV cartoon version, though that adaptation changed the setting to Europe.  I have fond memories of that cartoon as a kid, so it made me happy to see the reference in KQ6.

2. You come face-to-face with a pirate.
3. Double your arsenal, double your fun.

Technically, the mint isn't deadly; it can intoxicate Shamir, but we've never seen or heard anyone dying from it...

Actually, pure mint extract can kill Shamir. It's how you dispose of him if you don't get the lamp from the lampseller.

Really? I guess I have more KQ6 to play...

If you've never killed Shamir, you've also probably never encountered the cross-dressing scene in KQVI either.

No, I did encounter that, but it was a long time ago. I'll have to go back and play the short ending again sometime.

Yeah, you can cross-dress and still capture Shamir.

That is a cool thing about the various endings of KQ6--it's not *just* the short path and the long path. You can get a great mix of the two endings, with various possibilities coming into play. One I only knew about when I saw it in a video?
In the short path, you can use the Mirror on Shamir at the wedding to reveal him. I think even when I tried the short path, I always used the mint there to distract him and never figured out the mirror thing.
Whereas I always did the short path the way KatieHal describes, I never knew that
... one could use the mint instead at that point
I'll have to try that sometime.

And how, pray tell, do you get the lamp on the short path?

As for the current guessing game: I've got no flippin' clue

KatieHal

I'm *pretty* sure you could use the mint there anyways.

The short path doesn't prevent you from befriending Jollo--only doing the absolutely *minimum* means you never bother to do so.

I'm pretty sure the first time I played KQ6 I went through the short path, befriended Jollo, had the lamp from the lamp-seller, but DID NOT HAVE THE MINT, so at the showdown I was toast.
In order to get Shamir's lamp, you not only have to befriend Jollo, you also have to hand him the lamp-seller lamp so Jollo can make the swap.  How do you hand over the lamp in the short path?
Deloria

I don't think you can get Jollo to switch the lamps if you take the short path. If you try clicking the replica lamp on him in the tower, the narrator will just tell you that Shamir knows it's not his lamp. You can then click the mint on him and he'll accidentally kill himself.

No, you can. You just go down into the basement after getting inside.
