This. Also, you'd be amazed how people can twist straightforward text to mean what they want it to mean. >:(

Quotenot Holy Scripture, which given an Anglo-European background would almost certainly be taken to mean The Bible. But, by "holy scripture",

'holy texts', probably a better choice of words! 'scripture' almost always has bibilical connitations.

Laws, rules, regulations, constitutions, loopholes, journalists, lawyers, politicians, governments, ad nauseum!

Take for example Geologists talk about the San Andreas fault is a right-lateral strike-slip fault causing half of California to move northwards  towards Alaska, and will ultimately separate from the North American continent during its path to the north. The Gulf of California is evidence of that part of california splitting away from the continent forming a linear sea. This is a process that takes thousands of years, and has already happened a few times in the distant past, such that exotic terrains from California have accreted to Alaska's southern coast! California is composed of quite a bit of granite (and similar rocks with high silica contents) which lighter than the denser basalstic ocean crust, and will continue to float above the mantle. Thus California over thousands of years of time will turn into an island, and thousands of years beyond that become part of Alaska!

A journalist will (and have) then sensationally write that as, "California is going to fall/sink into the sea caused by the Big One. Everyone will  drown in the sea."

Harold Camping  (and even the 2012 movie) were even playing on a highly sensationalistic view of geology, with lands falling into the sea, due to apocalyptic prophecy... When that's simply not how the science works!
Well, ya, King's Quest is on Earth. Daventry is very old city from a long time ago. It's in ruins now and people aren't quite sure exactly where it used to be. There are some archaeologists searching through the ruins, they think they know its Daventry. But its somewhere on Earth."-Roberta Williams http://kingsquest.wikia.com/wiki/File:Daventryisearth.ogg

Personally, I think this is all less of a religious thing and just more of the same conspiracy theory nonsense.  True, it has a religious bent to it, but it's the same need for secret, special information, the same need to be an underdog fighting the good fight in the face of a scoffing world, that fuels all conspiracy theorists.  It doesn't matter what reality says.  The rapture didn't happen, but that just means that the rapture was wrong.  The end of the world is still coming.  It's the same as with the people who are given clear, undeniable, proof that we landed on the moon yet still stay it happened on a sound stage.  Or the people who invoke Loose Change yet are shown incontrovertibly that they're clueless, that their science is flawed, and that their holy film was originally a work of fiction that was later claimed to be factual because the film-maker is a sociopath who wanted to be famous (the 9/11 truthers really piss me off, but that's another issue entirely).  Reality can smack these people in the face over and over again, but they have their belief and they refuse to see anything else.

This is just more of the same.  I will say, though, that Camping at least seems like someone who believes what he's selling as opposed to clear sociopaths like Benny Hinn who are just in it for the money.  Camping lives in a world of conspiracies and codes and that's where he'll continue to reside, even after October comes and goes without incident.

This is nothing new. :P There have been so many wrong Rapture dates before this one. :P Clearly, if it's going to happen, no one is going to know about it until it actually happens. :P If people had thrown themselves off roofs, as they had just before past Great Disappointments, it would be an entirely different matter, but it seems to have done very little harm other than make naive idiots waste their money. :P

I just wish we could get one, solid date for the end of the world that every expert could agree on. It would make it so much more convenient...

Because I'm supposed to be throwing a magnificent end of the world party, and I don't want to have to pay for the open bar or the catering the next day. :P
"If your translation is correct, that was 'May a sleepy hippopotamus lie down on your house keys,' but you're not sure. Unfortunately, your fluency in griffin-speak is too low."

We're roleplaying in the King's Quest world: come join in the fun!

Amen to that!  Ain't no party like a rapture party 'cuz a rapture party don't stop!

Well, except for the rapture.
