This is one from way back in the early days, it's text-based but quite thoroughly enjoyable.  And totally free.  Looks like the team had plans in place for a sequel but it just never came together.

Ahh yes, Maddog Williams! one of my favorite indie sierraesque adventure games (up there with the Hugo trilogy). It is very King's Quest/Quest for Glory like (there is some monster combat). I think it might have been somewhat of a parody on those series even (although as a standalone story the universe is relatively serious).

The ending is a bit bizarre hinting at a kind of
more space quest style sequel
.

Actually it was just a couple of  years ago that the designers have mentioned an interest to go back and make the sequel. So who knows? Maybe someday.

Well, ya, King's Quest is on Earth. Daventry is very old city from a long time ago. It's in ruins now and people aren't quite sure exactly where it used to be. There are some archaeologists searching through the ruins, they think they know its Daventry. But its somewhere on Earth."-Roberta Williams http://kingsquest.wikia.com/wiki/File:Daventryisearth.ogg

The guys who made this game actually only live a few miles from me - I should probably just go by and ask what they're up to these days.  It's been some time since I played this game so memory could be a bit fuzzy but I remember liking it quite a lot (better than the Hugo games, though those ones are pretty good as well).
