What if Roberta had remade KQ1 in 3D?
« on: August 08, 2011, 09:19:14 AM »
How do you think the random encounters would be portrayed (in the early games these encounters were described as arcade sequences)? How would you escape the giant, dwarf, wizard, witch, rat, and enchanter? Would you simply have to run out of the areas they patrol (like in MMO's). Would you have to be more sneaky to get around the areas they patrol? How far will they chase you? How far can they spot you from, before they come after you?

...or would designers be forced to create ways to defeat them? If Roberta been designing it would she had been forced to add some kind of combat mechanism? Would combat just scare the enemy away from you, or could you actually defeat the enemy?

How would the encounter with the dragon, giant, and rat work (where there is more than one solution)? Would you have to aim the water for the dragon or toss the cheese correctly?

Well, ya, King's Quest is on Earth. Daventry is very old city from a long time ago. It's in ruins now and people aren't quite sure exactly where it used to be. There are some archaeologists searching through the ruins, they think they know its Daventry. But its somewhere on Earth."-Roberta Williams http://kingsquest.wikia.com/wiki/File:Daventryisearth.ogg

I openly admit that you know far more than I ever have or ever will about the King's Quest universe, so this may just be me being an idiot for not remembering (or maybe it's in a different version that I haven't played yet) but I can't for the life of me remember where the ray is in King's Quest 1?

I'm guessing he meant "rat" (as in, the one guarding the door to the leprechauns) and hit the "y" instead of the "t" (since they're right next to each other on the keyboard).
So what if I am, huh? Anyways, I work better when I'm drunk. It makes me fearless! If I see a bad guy, I'll just point my sword at him and saaaaaaaaaay, "Hey! Bad guy! You're not s'posed to be here! Go home or I'll stick you with my sword 'til you go, 'Ouch! I'm dead!' Ah-ha-ha!" Ha-ha. *hic* See? Ain't no one gonna be messin' wit' ol', Benny!

I'm not much of a fan of 1st person type games, but it would be kind of cool to do something more Lara Croft styles if this is what you mean? I think that platform and single perspective games were what computers could handle back then, but based off MoE, I think Roberta would've wanted the games to be more interactive like you're suggesting- that's why I'm glad TSL is 3D and interactive. I'd almost like to try MoE to see Roberta's vision of the game in 3D (cept I don't like shooter games)

I think if it were puzzle based and not nessecarily hit point based that I'd be dead keen to play it. I like King's Quest for plot and puzzles. I like the fact that actual fight scenes are movies. I don't mind an arcade scene, but they can be a little too unnerving for me if they're aimed at gamers. I'm no where near good enough to play at that level :(

Arkillian, MOE, isn't a shooter game (many enemies are even immune to the bows). Think more Quest for Glory with Lara Croft mixed (do you like Lara Croft?). Shooting is very limited. The fighting is more hack and slash, point and click sword fighting. It's also primarily third person, with option of switching to first person.

I don't know if you can get the demos to work (with the fan patch). They cover the first two worlds, and give a reasonable idea of the gameplay and puzzle variety. It has many puzzles.

Most people seem to have an idea what they think MOE is based on pictures and hearsay, but don't seem to have any idea what it actually has! It's not perfect and definitely has combat, but the game is definitely more than that.

As far as combat is concerned it's very slow, and very easy. It's actually kinda boring. Just click on an enemy 1-3 times with your sword/axe/mace/etc until they die. It's slower pace than even Zelda OOT (which the game has more in common with in some ways)! It's simplified even over QFG (there is no real dodging/shield work). The game was clearly designed for adventure gamers that lack skill needed for true 'action games'. Thr combat is suitable  amateurs and beginners, even on hard (on easy combat is practically ignorable, as enemies do almost no damage, and die in one hit).
