Okay, so I've heard there's no way of doing this...but I've also heard there IS a way of doing this, so I was wondering....
Does anyone know if you can get subtitles in KQ7?  Like...showing what the people are saying?  Because I would really like to get names for the trolls in the mudbaths without playing the game 99086983 times to make sure I heard them right and am near to spelling them right.
Also, yes, I have KQ7 now. :) YEE!!!

I've never heard of it being possible myself.

There aren't any subtitles, I'm afraid. I can probably type out any lines you can't understand.

(From what I could understand myself, the fat male troll is Bloatar, the thin male troll is Hogart(h?), the thin female troll (wife of Bloatar) is Eglethyne, and the fat female troll (wife of Hogarth) is Winnie.)

You might be able to download a patch of some sort that enables text, but im not sure if there is one ; (

Sure, you COULD download a patch for it, the only problem is there isn't one :P

This won't help you with subtitles, but if you exit the game just before the mudbath scene (saving it), then play through it once.  When it's done, press ALT+CTRL+DEL and End Task for KQ7.  Forcing the termination like that won't allow the game to auto-save.  :)

I hate the auto-save >:(, you should have a choice of saving it or not ;)

Yeah I know, in fact I think in my very first post at kq9 I mentioned that I so do not like that auto-save feature, and would definitely not want it in KQ9.  :)

I used to exit KQ7 without saving by clicking on the "X" and closing the window 8)
The KQ7 saving system is very bad for replaying :P

I hated the whole save system in KQ7 :-\, first the auto-save part and then not being able to have multiple saves unless you started a new game :-\

I agree.  It was the lamest thing!  The only good part about it was that if you forgot to save before you died, you could resume where you left off.  Still, they could have implemented that much better.  ::)

I have no idea what they were thinking with that awful auto-save feature, except that does go with the general "hand-holding" feel of the whole game. :P

I like to be able to replay specific parts of a game, so I have some seriously thorough savegame collections for many of my adventure games and RPGs. Anytime I play a game that limits your saving in some way, it usually drives me nuts. :P

The no-text-mode thing is pretty silly, too. I can almost understand having text mode and speech mode be exclusive, but no text mode at all?

This is just my personal opinion here, but I believe Roberta was targetting a much younger audience when she created KQ7.  Everything about it seemed geared to younger kids than anyone else: auto-saving, cartoon-like cell animation, magic wand, lack of text.  It's almost like a step backwards from how KQ5 and KQ6 were made.  I did still enjoy it as a game, but it did feel a bit "dumbed down" with respect to other KQ games.  8)

I have to agree with everything Yonkey said.  I felt really limited, not being able to touch *everything* on the screen.  The first time I play most King's Quests (now that I'm experienced) I would spend like...half an hour on each screen just to make sure I didn't miss anything.  But in this one...there were things I could have sworn would be important and would have spent ages trying to figure out normally...and I couldn't interact with them at all!

Thank you, Akril, for the names of the trolls, btw, that saves me a TON of listening to Malicia call them disgusting. (I hate her voice...she's so masculine! :P)

Actually, there most definitely IS subtitles in KQ7. When I was recording the MIDI soundtrack a month or so ago, to ensure the MIDI's wouldn't be quietened by the speech I attempted to disable it in resource.cfg and some other way, which I can't remember off-hand (possibly in install.exe with a 'audnone.drv' from another Sierra VESA game like SQ6).

When I loaded up the game, whenever there was some long speech dialogue, text came up on the screen- coloured text at that! I was surprised.

Sorry I can't be more definite, I'll investigate it.

KQ7 was childish sometimes, however quite adult and entertaining in places! I doubt you go through a witch's underwear drawer in a kid's game. ;) (Or better yet, get killed in various gruesome ways.)

Also- on auto-saving, so I could load different parts of the game when recording the music, I made folders called '1', '1pt2', etc etc. with my saves from different parts of the game in different folders. Time consuming, but worth it..

Good idea on the autosave, Spikey!!  I may try that!
Also, if you figure out how to get the subtitles, I'm sure I'm not the only person who'd appreciate knowing how to get them!  Thanks!

Spikey

I could upload my saves, if anyone wanted me to. Again, I had to because, for example, I wouldn't want to record a MIDI file from Ooga Booga and have to go through the whole game up to that point to do so.

I'm rather busy at the moment with Uni- haven't even had time to record any more KQ7 MIDI mixes as OGG!
But I will look into it for you (and the community), and post here should I find something solid  to go on.

I haven't listened to all of these myself to find Ooga Booga, but have you tried checking out these: http://www.queststudios.com/quest/kq7.html Spikey?  :)

I noticed the subtitle thing with Freddy Pharkas, if you turn the sound bitrate number (or whatever) into zero then subtitles are automatic. Not sure why they didn't make subtitles more readily available though. ;P
