So from what I hear they're not bringing back any music from any of the previous games. Kinda a bummer for me. I would've loved getting nostalgic listening to those tunes. Im hoping they'll at least maybe stick Cassima's theme somewhere in there. Loved that song...

Welcome, InvertedSilence! :)

All our music is original, though it's still in progress and we don't know how much we'll actually use.

Yeah that was pretty much the impression I got from interviews and such. Will the new music possibly contain any altered versions of some original tunes? Or maybe some short musical "cameos" so to speak?

Welcome InvertedSilence!

Personally, I'd like to see Cassima and Rosella's themes from KQ6 and KQ4 (respectively) somewhere in the game.  Even if it's just a snippet.  I really thought they were very beautiful.
And, while the version of Rosella's theme for KQ9 that's listed doesn't give a good example of this, in the theme, I added just a hint of some of her theme from KQ4.  While I'm not the official composer, I wrote some "possible" music for the game (some of which is on this website).  I'm a huge fan of placing little snippets of past music into things - especially pieces that people will notice and make them smile as they remember playing those past games.

Heh, listen to me - going off as if I do this all the time.  I am no professional composer and one thing Cesar is VERY big on is professional sounding music.  So no matter what the music is, I'm sure it will be lush and fantastic!

It would be great to hear bits from the old KQ themes in KQ9 :)
I think AGDI did something like that with the KQ2+ theme - it's original, but has a distinct King's Quest sound to it 8)

I extracted KQ7's music resources last night and found various pieces not used in the final game. Some of those were really amazing! I think they could work in KQ9, recorded as high-quality digital files of course.

Interesting...makes me wonder sometimes when games have hidden extra features on them if the creators just ran out of time to fit it in. As far as them being used in KQ9 it's been said in the latest interview found in the inventory that all music will be original.

Oh man you have no idea. The amount of hidden stuff that wasnt added into games is enormus. In fact, in the instance of legacy of kain, their second game (soul reaver) had an entire second half that was never finished, which was intended to end the series and if it had been the three games which followed it would never have been created. And one of the most brilliant storylines of all time would have been lost forever...

Hmm. With sound stuff, I can't help but think it's maybe more that they record the stuff then decide not to use it for whatever reason... but extracting the unused WAVs and/or MIDIs from the game files would be more trouble than it's worth.

I <3 going through sound files with GAP... you can almost always find at least a few WAVs that don't show up in the actual game. (And usually there's quite more than a few.)

Going through graphics and messages is also interesting, if you have the right tools. I've come across a bunch of things in several games that never showed up in the gameplay itself. It's fun to wonder "What might have been?"

Anyone know if this sound is owned by Sierra? It's the death sound, from KQ. It was recorded it from the game.

death

P.S. Assuming that it didn't come from a KQ game, and was made using a keyboard, software, virtual instrument, etc.

sivvrianBARRY

Well the first part of that is a very common theme, I don't really know where it is from but it is used in a lot of things (Undertaker's theme song in WWE comes to mind....yes I am a wrestling fan ;D), and the little thing at the end probably isn't enough to make it ownable by Sierra.

Jeysie

Hmm. Isn't the first part of that just the classic "funeral march"?

yeah I doubt anyone could claim this tune was theirs (in terms of copyright laws etc) although I'm sure theres some composer who thought of the original motif....come to think of it I'm sure I used to know his name...
