Once Upon A Time (Series) - anyone watch it?

Saw the pilot to this last week. The premise is that the Wicked Queen (of Snow White) cursed the fairy tale kingdom. Now, they're all under a sort of amnesia spell and living in a modern-day town. The Queen is in charge as the mayor of town. The only one to escape the curse is Snow White and the Prince's daughter, who was sent away as a baby, and has now come back to the town because her own son (who she gave up for adoption) showed up on her doorstep asking for help.

Anyone else see this and have opinions?

Yeah, I saw it. I don't really have much of an opinion though. I would need to see where they are taking the story. But for a pilot, I can say it was very intriguing, and I plan on keeping up with the series unless I lose interest later on. I would be more interested if they strayed away from having just one fairy tale and go toward having multiple fairy tales intertwined. I did notice that they had Rumpelstiltskin, and his character is very ominous. It's a good start.

I also saw Grimm this week, so there is a bit of "fairy tale meets reality" competition going on. But different channels and different airtime, so neither one is compromised. Still, this genre may be worn out if more shows follow this trend.

I've seen Once Upon a Time last week and this week--it's alright. I'm not quite sure yet--it hasn't blown me away, but I'm entertained enough to keep watching for now.

I also saw Grimm. So far it feels like a more light-hearted, buddy cop version of Supernatural. Which isn't bad, but also leaves it feeling not so original.

I felt like Grimm started off too slowly. The audience was kind of abruptly thrown into this world of blutenboten (or whatever they are called). I had a hard time getting interested, but as soon as I was, it held me for a greater portion of the episode.

Once Upon A Time is more whimsical, probably because of the kid trying to save the entire storybook of characters. It has almost this innocence amongst all of the evil that protruded from the curse. I kind of like both forms of storytelling, but like I had said earlier, I'll need to see more. Which reminds me, I missed the new episode of Once Upon A Time. I'll have to catch up.

After reading the title, I though you meant this "Once Upon a Time...". They used to broadcast dubbed versions of it here sometime during the '80s.

I love this show! I'm a sucker for fairy tales, always have been. My friend in Socorro and I text each other for hours trying to figure it out. (She so needs Skype so we can talk about it live!) We are trying to figure out if Mr. Gold knows the truth about the curse. We think the queen/mayor does. We are also waiting for Prince Charming to wake up and kick the queen out of town.

Adrienne--you should check out the Fables graphic novels if you're enjoying this show. I think you'd really enjoy those if fairy tale retellings are up your alley!

I'm going to have to really look into these! I did a brief skim on the internet and it looks interesting. Thanks Katie!

Added bonus, Telltale is planning a video game based on them! :)

I'm really enjoying this show -- it's a little hokey, I guess, but I think it kind of needs to be.

With the two fairy tale shows in their first season now (Grimm, being the other) I've been comparing the two and I am quite enjoying both of them. One thing I've noticed is how much story there is to Once Upon a Time -- a few places seem a little stiff, but it can't really be helped, there's SO much to explain!

The queen/mayor most definitely knows about the curse. She was the one who inflicted it anyway. She should be aware of what she did. I'm not sure what Mr. Gold's intentions are, but I did remember that he was 'given' Emma's name. Whatever that means. It was the price Snow White had to pay to get Rumplestiltskin's help in the fairy tale world, so I imagine that he remembered Emma when she introduced herself in the real world. It's hard to tell right now. They are definitely making him out to be an enigma.

I think Mr Gold DOES know, but I'm not entirely sure if the Mayor knows.

I just saw the new episode, and I have to admit, I'd be really irked if this whole story was just a figment of some kid's imagination. Oh, writers of Lost . . . you tricked me once before, but I'd be a fool to fall for it again. I can see right through you.  >:(

I don't know about the Mayor anymore. I thought she would have remembered the curse. Now I see what Katie is saying. Mr. Gold was supposed to lose his memory along with everybody else, but he definitely knows something.  :-\

They've played the Mayor very vaguely--everything she's said & done so far COULD still just be an overbearing controlling mom who's also kinda freaked she might lose her kid to his birth mom. And good for them in striking that balance.

I was let down by the fight with Maleficent, though. That should've been much more awesome.

So far, so strange. It puts me in the mood to play King's Quest, and it would make a ridiculously easy crossover to do, especially if you pull in some of the Williams-Jansen-Spears mythos of The Withdrawal and how curses work. They already invoked the "spells always have a weakness" line from KQ6.

It's to the point where I picture a fellow on the fringes of town (just outside city limits, but still affected) wearing a red polo shirt and a battered up hat with a dingy feather stuck in it - maybe running a second hand shop ("Perhaps you'll find a use for it") I could also see a "Mr. Gwydion" being friends with (or maybe a former student of) Miss Blanchard.

And now I'm picturing Sean Maher and Summer Glau reprising a brother and sister role as Alex and Rose...

The new episode was awesome, but now I'm really confused. But for some reason, I can't stop watching it.  :-\

Oh crap, not again. I should have known what I was getting myself into when they said "writers of Lost". Now, I'll be addicted for seven seasons.

I must say that I am quite enjoying Once Upon a Time. I'm intrigued by it. As with Katie, I'm on the fence about the Mayor, but I'm leaning towards she at least knows more than she's letting on.

The mayor knows as well as Rumpelstiltskin, however, I think he is more of a neutral type of character, aiding both sides for the benefit of himself. Next week looks good too.

Yeah, Rumpelstiltskin definitely seems to be a neutral character. Personally, I like neutral characters a lot. I can't wait for next week's episode. I've been watching these on Hulu, so I don't get the preview for the next episode at the end, but it's not a big deal. The show is good enough for me right now to warrant coming back to it. As for Grimm, the jury is still out. It was definitely slow getting started, and I'm not sure I'm completely sold on it. I may have to watch another episode to get a better idea of what it'll be like.
