Just curious what people thought was the best game of all time, regardless of system.

Super Mario Bros.

Everyone knows it.  Everyone loves it.

"Sorry, Mario, but our princess is in another castle!"

That game..... changed gaming.  When I first played it in 1985.... it was like someone dropped magic into that gray box, and handed me a weird rectangle to control it with.

Pong or electronic pingpong in general. Simplicity at its finest. It's like the Citizen Kane of video games: You may not like it, but it just has to be there.

You know, the game is actually pretty good if you know what to do or have a manual.

The Silver Lining, obviously! :P Ok, seriously, I wouldn't even know where to begin trying to come up with a "best game of all time."  :stars:

Rosella

It's hard to come up with a game where I enjoyed the trifecta of plot, characters and gameplay. The only game that comes to mind at the moment is Crisis Core, but that's only because I've played it recently.

I'd definitely have to put Kingdom Hearts up there on that list though. :P
I'm a princess even if my kingdom is pixelated.

Good lord.

The Story is compelling enough, but the FMV really just...... sucks.

This game is begging for a remake.

Hmmm.  Let me think on this one.  I've played lots of games in my life, on lots of different systems.  I'll get back to you.

Yeah I'm going to have to think about this one as well.  It's hard to pick an absolute best but I am thinking about it.

After a few minutes of thinking about it, Super Mario RPG.  The story was so sweet, it made even Bowser likeable, and I think that was the scariest design for him.  I mean, just look at him!

Not to mention Peach was a great healer, and indestructible if you put the Lazy Shell Armor on her.
I have my cake and eat it too, until it's gone.  Then I can't do either.

Aww!  You have the Sword of Hugging +3!  All of your attacks deal affectionate damage!

I dunno, the FMV was actually part of its charm to me --at least at the time. I just date back to how excited and pleased I was with that game, and the whole package just makes it the most special game I have ever played in my life. And I don't think that even if today I were to play a game as good as that --and I've played plenty-- I would feel the same about it.

I wouldn't know how to list THE BEST GAME ever otherwise, or I can give an answer like yours, Super Mario Bros, which technically it's very accurate since we all know what we owe to Mario, but I don't have that emotional connection to it.

I think I'm gonna have to agree with Rosella. Kingdom Hearts is an amazing experience. When it first came out, I doubted its quality, and thought that it was going to be a flop. It surprised the hell out of me. I'll be a lifelong fan, from here on out.

You have to approach it from the poin of view that it is an adventure game, not a movie. The way that stuff is cut and paced reminds a lot of the way 90s adventure games would show you the whole playing field and character portraits. It uses the classical way of filming a dialogue with establishing shot, close-up dialogue, close-up dialogue, close-up dialogue,  long shot or close-up action, close-up dialogue, close-up dialogue and finally a close-up on reaction (usually through monologue), rather than say a medium two shot dialogue+action, close-up reaction, two shot dialogue, medium shot reaction to dialog, close-up dialogue, perhaps even cut to what they are talking about with lines overlapping each other.

Okay, I've thought about it...and I actually agree with Blackthorne.

The first ever Super Mario Bros. game was amazing and totally gave Nintendo a face, but for me it's the series in its entirety that I consider the Best Game Of All Time.  There are too many gems in the series to pick just one; I have fond memories of all of them:

The original because it's the first video game I remember playing.
The second one because I remember playing it with my brother and sister one school day that we all stayed home with the flu.
The third one because my cousin showed me all the secrets and I'm awesome at it now.
Super Mario World because it came with the SNES when Trav got it for his birthday in 1992.
Super Mario RPG because it's epic and still ridiculously fun to play.
Mario 64 because that was the first Mario game I beat entirely on my own, with no help.

...and so on and so forth.  It's an amazing series and continues to be as popular now as it was then.  I see the little kids at work sporting Super Mario gear all the time; one of my kindergarteners was Mario for Halloween, and his best friend was Wario.  It's timeless.  It's multi-generational.  It's awesome!

Super Mario, as a series, really is awesome.  I still love to play all of them to this day.... right up to the New Super Mario Bros. and Mario Bros Galaxy 1&2 on my Wii!

Mario Galaxy was indeed a lot of fun. I still have to pick up Galaxy 2.

I'm having such a hard time answering my own question.  Super mario bros., all of them, are definetely a contender.  I have so many memories playing all of them in the 80s, and now they are still as popular as ever.  I think it was probably everyone's first nintendo game, along with duck hunt.

For some reason, I'm heavily considering the first Metroid on NES.

I can't honestly pick a best game. Here's a list in no order whatsoever.

Batman Arkham Asylum
Zelda Twilight Princess
Half-Life 2
Space Quest IV
The Elder Scrolls III: Morrowind
Duke Nukem 3D
Super Mario Bros 3
The Secret of Monkey Island
Minecraft
Metroid Prime
Sonic 3/Knuckles (they're basically one game)
