Skyward Sword = Best Zelda Game Ever?

I definitely rely on reviews to determine whether or not a game is worth purchasing.  People who don't look at them at all are idiots, in my opinion.

That said, I am always suspicious of inordinately positive reviews that fail to mention ANY flaws.  I don't believe I've ever played a 100% PERFECT game, and I doubt I ever will, and when reviewers don't mention flaws, it only makes me think they aren't doing their due diligence.  I always read multiple reviews of any given game I'm considering, and I look almost exclusively at the flaws mentioned, because I typically already KNOW the good points--those are usually plastered all over every advertisement.  If the flaws are things I know I can live with, I typically pick up the game.  If not, I pass on it (or perhaps give it a rental.)

This is one of the games I've been looking forward to so I've asked for it for Christmas.  I'm sure there will be some flaws to the game, but most of the Zelda games have been good, so I figure this one will be pretty good at least.

I just hope you don't have to fish to move forward in the game though.  That irked me about Twilight Princess...

Yep, my local Gamestop is doing a midnight release on this one so I'll be wandering over that way on Saturday evening to pick this one up.  Maybe I'll even find some time to play it for a while next week since I have a little bit of free time courtesy of the holiday.

Did you guys catch the "oh-so-controversial" Gamespot review that gave it a 7.5?  They were calling it out for being formulaic, and called the controls "finicky."  Finicky controls is a problem with the Wii in general, so I'm wondering how much of this criticism can be directed at Skyward Sword specifically.

Interesting, he says that SS continues to make the same mistakes that the Zelda series has always been making, but then doesn't elaborate at all on what those "mistakes" are.  He was probably just being pissy because he had to stop playing CoD:MW3 for a while to review Skyward Sword.  Poor guy.

Well, Zelda games are DEFINITELY formulaic, but it's exactly that formula that fans are looking for when they buy a Zelda game.  I do agree that the series could use some innovation though.  And I'll be honest, I HATE the Wii.

Yeah I haven't really been SUPER impressed with the titles on the system.  There have been a few good ones sure, but overall it was a bit underwhelming.  Here's to hoping the Wii U will deliver a better lineup as they get on the HD train and (hopefully) make life easier for 3rd party developers.

All they have to do is avoid gimmicks. Even Microsoft and Sony's attempt at motion control went up in flames. I haven't seen a good Kinect or Move game yet. All I have is a long list of broken promises. If Nintendo just focuses on making good games and allow a convenient online experience for all players, I think it'll be able to hold its own with the other consoles. Also, they'll have to do more than just make life easier for 3rd party developers. They'll have to prove they are serious about their console by fronting high-quality first party titles. They are the ones that sell the console, and the the consoles are the ones that sell the the third-party ports.

I really just wish Nintendo would stop making consoles and just transition into making games only.  Then they could release those games for the other GOOD consoles.

As much as I want to get Skyward Sword, I still need to get some form of a Wii Motion Plus controller. I think the adapter makes the controller look clunky, so I might have to trade some of my old controllers to get a brand new controller that has the Wii Motion built-in. Another reason why I'm disappointed in Nintendo this generation (and Sony too). The need to change the original concept of the controller to all of these different variations is a dumb move. Alas, there's not much I can do about it. I need the Wii Motion Plus if I am to play possibly the last good game on the Wii.

This is the main reason I went for the Collector's Edition - an extra $20 nets you a gold wii-remote with the motion plus already set to go.  It's very cool-looking.

We just picked it up today.  So far, I really love the battle system, and the characters are hilarious.  I hate the stamina wheel.  It runs out way too fast.

Zelda's Father = Best Unibrow Ever!
I have my cake and eat it too, until it's gone.  Then I can't do either.

Aww!  You have the Sword of Hugging +3!  All of your attacks deal affectionate damage!

I played for about an hour yesterday - after getting a bunch of work stuff out of the way I just decided I needed to at least open the thing.  I'm definitely super impressed with the sword, though admittedly I've been pretty sick the last few days so I was trying to play the game laying on the couch and it didn't like that too much.  I'll try it again actually sitting or standing sometime this week.

I do like the art style, I find it to be a nice meeting point between Twilight Princess and Wind Waker.

Loftwing Proptip - I had the most horrendous time trying to figure out how to fly this freaking thing until I discovered that to get it to flap normally you just wave the remote up and down once and then after it flaps you do it again.  I thought you had to do it faster than that at first.  Once you get the hang of it the flying is really fun.

No, not yet.  But I'm not that far into the game.  There is a free downloadable patch that you can get from the Wii store as a fix though.
