I finally got around to playing this again and I figured out how to empower both the nightshade and the shears. I also added sea water to the cup, but it isn't shaking and I can't find a way to get just the salt. I've been everywhere, but I can't figure out what to do. A few specific things I've tried:

  • Clicking on the nightshade with Cassima makes the narrator say that it is a good idea, but she isn't saying anything. When I try to make her say something by starting a conversation, I don't get the option to politely ask to borrow her voice.
  • Valanice is still asleep. Between her and Cassima, there don't appear to be any female subjects in the game at this point.
  • I thought that Edward would happily let me cut his rather long hair and borrow his strength to help Rosella. But I can't do that. I tried a few other people with hair and I don't have the option to do it.
  • I can't get the cup to start shaking. I've tried shaking it myself, tried giving it to Stick & Tomato, and even sadistically trying to stick him in the glue so he would flail around. Nothing seems to be working.
Nothing seems to be working and I'm lost at this point. Any hints would be appreciated.

There's a more convenient source for the "male" and "female" ingredients in the castle.

Just tried Alexander and Rosella. Surprisingly the hair thing worked with Alexander, even though he's a king and therefore not technically a subject :-\

I get the same response when trying the nightshade with Rosella: that it would be a great idea if she were saying something. Being unconscious kind of prevents that. Valanice is still asleep, Cassima still won't give me the option to borrow her voice, and the female guard dog is gone. Everyone else in the castle is male.

By "subject" it means the subject of the spell you're casting, not of the kingdom.

Have you been to the bookshop? Interesting stuff in that there bookshop....

Huh, I had no idea that it meant subject of the spell. You know, I was wondering for a long time if the banshee counted as a subject of the kingdom.

Yeah, I've been to the library. Jollo and Ali don't have anything to say. I've read all the books several times. I'm guessing you're referring to the one about the Nightshade. It says that it took Persephone's breath away when she plucked it. Regardless, I can't give it to Rosella.

On a lark, I tried putting the pea under her bed, not expecting the comatose Rosella to actually respond. Bizarrely she did! What a weird puzzle that all was.

KatieHal

Well, it IS a pea...and she IS a real princess. :)

Yeah, I got that. :) I just wasn't expecting someone in a coma to groan in discomfort.

Also figured out how to get the lively shaken salt. Looks like my sadistic urge to make him shake around in the glue bucket wasn't that far off!
