Congrats Cat!
Sorry I wasn't around to help you with the non-Christian perspective - I been gone for a couple of days :-\ Not being a native speaker & all, I couldn't help you with proof-reading either :-[

As for my moral values (if anyone's still interested in that) - it's basically "Do whatever you want, as long as you don't harm anyone else". Forget all those fancy words & titles, if everyone would just stick to this one simple rule the world would be a much better place to live in ::)
"Never argue with idiots. They'll drag you down to their level and beat you with experience."

Actually, Storm's philosophy is pretty much exactly like mine. The only difference is that I would add "Promote happiness whenever you can." as a second credo.

(Unfortunately I had to go to bed early that day, so I couldn't help Koko out either. :P )

Questing Character

Both good philosophies, but the word "harm" is vague enough so that we'd still be having issues.  Emotional harm?  Mental harm?  Physical harm?  And what exactly *is* harm?  See, you'd have to define all of that.
And of course, you'd also have to define who's happiness and what happiness is.  And what "promoting happiness" is. This is because of the inevitable "most people are stupid" clause of humanity.

Jeysie

I would define harm as the state of being injured or miserable when you don't want to be. And happiness for me would be everyone's happiness.

Obviously you can't obtain this perfectly... you can't make everyone happy, and sometimes you have to cause injury or misery for the greater good. But the idea for me is to try as much as possible to make life better for as many others as possible while causing as little harm as possible doing it.

Or at the very least, do whatever makes you happy while causing as little harm to others as possible. Still better than a lot of what we have now.

To me, every time you get into specifics, you start getting to "black & white"... like, "OK, this is always bad, and this is always good, and if you do stuff we claim is bad, we're going to stop you from doing it, even if you're happy and not harming anyone, and thus our stopping you from doing it is the only thing causing problems."

Was the morality that used to exist just an illusion meaning that because of government regulation people did what they wanted to do anyway just in private?  I am afraid that all of American society is in a hopeless decline that we can never recover from.  Just my two cents.   :'(

I have similar fears for the US, but I have little to add to your comment.

Drunken Chinchilla

Hmmmm I wouldn't go as far as saying hopeless. The majority of news shown is negative or crime related. We don't get to hear about all the good and positive things that are happening. Also I don't think there ever WAS a time when there were a good sense of morality lol. The worlds been as messed up as it is today for hundreds of years :p

Well, it would be nice if some news could be more positive and somehow attract viewers so that they could see and hear something good that happened rather than sensationalizing the bad stuff and predicting that it will only get worse.

I'd be inclined to agree that morality in olden days was mostly just an illusion, although it was more from societal pressures than from outright government regulation, I'd suspect. The main reason society seems more immoral nowadays is because people care less about hiding it.

As for the news... I agree I'd also like to hear more positive stuff. But in the US, at least, news nowadays needs to "sell" as much as anything else... and the flash that sells is easier to get from negative stories than from positive ones. Not to mention that it's likely easier to get people "stuck to the TV" when they're worried and tense about something aired. (There's a psychology/sociology paper in here somewhere, I bet.)
