When Graham uses the memory gem, [spoiler]the prince on the Isle of the Beast reverts to a beast.[/spoiler]

Was one the cause of the other, or was that simply a convienent place to put the trigger?

A good place for the trigger, really. There's no correlation between the events themselves.
