Let me help you with that Carmack guy -

"John Carmack, co-founder, owner and lead programmer of Id software. The creator of Doom."

courtesy of my "Babylon" :D

There are several reasons why I couldn't care less about knowing who that guy is ::)

Thank you! (this bit of information will probably be forgotten by tomorrow, but at least it'll still be in this thread). ;D

Who in the world posts cheats for adventure games? I can understand walkthroughs, but cheats for getting things ahead of time? Unheard of, at least for me.

At least you believe in the KQ9 team, that's cool.

I never said that.

You misunderstood me...
I said that you would rather finish the project sooner than make it portable. After you have it finished and release it for Windows, you can take all the time in the world to make it portable.

And that is exactly what you said:

Fristly, I never called anybody a moron.

Secondly, I never disrespected the team or complained about their work or their efforts or questioned their dedication and integrity.  You shouldn't make fictional quotes up on people, since I never even suggested the team weren't doing a good job.  (Back to the point of the thread) I just think that intelligent use of an open source license on parts of the project would be beneficial for KQ9 in terms of both portability and quality.  That's my opinion.  It's a free internet, people can state their opinions, right?  How is that offending the team?  I object to you incinuating that I explicitly or implicitly insulted the KQ9 team when I did no such thing; it's out of order to make false claims about people.  It's called slander.

Neither did I question your intelligence, although I can understand you having this interpretation.

I put down, in perhaps too harsh a manner, a statement or 2 of yours and copycats'.  If you object to being told when you (might be) wrong, then what are you doing posting in public forums?  It's not as if you are always right (I could quote this thread for an example).  It's not as if I'm always right (too many examples to quote).

Anyway, I'm done explaining myself to you.  You want to take things personally and bear a grudge, it's a free internet and you do that.  I'll simply ignore anything else negative that you have to say because I can't really see what I've done wrong other than try to have a decent debate with fans and developers about the benefits of open source and cross-platform goodness.  It's not as if I expected KQ9 to be open sourced and I'm now getting upset because it won't be.  I'm just happy that they're considering Linux - that'll go a long way to helping it work on *BSD and OSX.

PS.  I assume you are not a member of the team.  But you do have a pretty cat.

Yonkey -
About the game's progress - You're preaching to the converted :D
I think you should re-read Beernutts post... he doesn't say that you'll never finish the game, and he does mention that his pessimism didn't stay the same. That part I know by myself, since I read

The fact is, that such pessimism is unavoidable. Cesar can sing the game's praises till he's blue in the face, show us every bit of progress, art music & plot and still there will be pessimism because it's a fan project. And like it or not, that means any of the people working on it can just get up and leave, setting the project back.

Ok, you mentioned in the other thread that you believed our conduct to be "unprofessional", so I'll respond to you as professionally as I can. ::)

Yonkey - You've got me wrong.  My pessimism has decreased since the Inventory article.  It's still there, but instead of totally beliveving it'll never happen, there's now a slight glimmer that it really will happen.  And you cannot say my pessimism is unfounded considering how almost all past fan projects fail (almost).

The thing is, you never mentioned that the statment above was what you're basing your complete pessimism on.  From reading your first post (which caused the flame war closely after it), it looks as if you are insulting this project in particular and not all/most fan projects.  Not to mention, you never indicated in that post what level of pessimism you had for the project, nor that it had decreased with The Inventory issue.   In fact, it seemed as though your pessimism was fueled from the issue.  You single-handedly managed to mock the art, programming, and PR departments in one fail swoop.  Naturally, everyone assumed your pessimism was 100% and that you only wished the KQ9 project to take much longer than projected.

You only stated that the post was your own personal opinon and that you didn't mind being attacked by everyone, 25 posts later.  Every post you've made always managed to have some pessimistic statment in them about the completion of this project, whether it was a sarcastic comment, direct insult or blatant put-down.  After reading every post on these forums, you are the only person whose pessimism is directed at the project as a whole.  So if you're wondering why you had been attacked, those are the main reasons.

For future knowledge, if you have a problem with something in particular, you could have posted your complaint in a more descriptive manner.  Instead of insulting and discouraging others, you could have stated that your doubt in the completion of this project is based on a trend of other fan projects which have failed.  By the way, we are not affiliated with those other fan projects and therefore our success is not determined by their's.

You are free to express your opinions on anything.  However, do not be surprised if you happen to get attacked, if your opinion is in disagreement with the vast majority of fans here.  You will be heard, but it's up to each individual person to decide whether they agree with you or not.

Now, since you stated yourself that your pessimism has decreased, it is a slight relief.  Keep in mind that our team is working hard on this game.  We try to update everyone on our progress, but for obvious reasons we cannot release crucial information about the game.  We want the game to be as much as a surprise for fans as possible, rather than some affirmation of what has already been said in public.  We also know that the true fans out there (myself included) are dying for this to come out as soon as possible.  So, the next time you feel the urge to say "I see the project taking 64 more years", do us all a favour and please don't. :)

Thanks,
"A wish changes nothing. A decision changes everything."

I was referring to Storm's cat, posted on her webpage.  I'm sorry your cat passed away Storm.

:(

Although that doesn't give you (Storm) an excuse to continue being negative and rude.  You speak of respect; take your own words to heart.

But if there is a chinese interest in the game, then why not allow it to be ported to Chinese?  If the game followed certain standards (unicode stuff) then this would be a mere translation.

:)

If you have the source and resources to build and run the game, then you will be able to extract anything that happens in the game including all scripts or external data files that provide such event interaction.  Since you've been "a part in many OSS projects" you should know that.
It would be naive to assume that not making the sources available would prevent this.  People will hack hex or worse if they're that determined.  And people will post game guides.  This is similar to the old Microsoft related adage; security through obscurity.  Just because you add an 'extra layer' to get past, doesn't mean people won't get past it.  And even if they can't, once somebody finds out by other means, they'll spread the word.  What are you going to do?  Censor the internet to prevent people cheating?

What Open-sourced projects have you been a part of, and what role did you have in each?  Not being a developer, what contributions can you provide?
Primarily //www.xwt.org.  I'm a developer there - here's a diagram I made just today.  My other roles have been less prominent, although I'm trying to get involved in //www.gentoo.org for which I'd like to be making ebuilds and submit a menu-generating script to add to portage, and a couple of XWT-related projects - //bossogg.sf.net, //www.everybuddy.com/eb-lite, //www.plone.org are 3 projects that I wish to develop xwt clients for, when I have the time.

I said it before, it won't be Open-Sourced.
Who's that speaking?  You or the team?  The team has stated, and I listened and responded respectfully.  It's interesting that you speak with authority when you have none.

And no-one has to give you a reason.

Hopefully it will be ported to Linux, and that should satisfy you.

You do have a "holier-than-thou" attitude when your discuss this matter, and if you not real sure about a subject, you shouldn't bring it up.  It's funny how you respond to other people's post who you feel don't "understand," but you won't respond to mine.
In truth, I hadn't looked at the thread recently.  (I have a busy life.)  Also in truth, it's stuff hardly worth responding to.  You think you can get a rise out of me by flaming me?  Sorry to disappoint you.  Idiots (or idiotic comments) don't annoy me.   I admire Yonkey for being so restrained in his responses to you.

Hehe, that is a good saying. :)

Although I don't think you can point to much that I've said that'd make that dead horse cry.  Whilst a few comments a while back were harsh, there's not too much unjustified that I've said - including my reply to Beernutts' rather pointless flame attempts.
