Ashes In The Fall:

A mass of hands press on the market window
Ghosts pf progress
Dressed in slow death
Feeding on hunger
And glaring through the promise
Upon the food that rots slowly in the aisle
A mass of nameless at the oasis
That hides the graves beneath the master's hill
Are buried for drinking
The river's water
While shackled to the line
At the empty well

This is the new sound
Just like the old sound
Just like the noose wound
Over the new ground

Drunken Chinchilla

Scissor sisters - Can't come quickly enough

Sailling through the tunnels
In the morning by yourself
There's a very special feeling
True sensation all is well
If you stand and reach your arms out wide
Close your eyes and try to fly
It's an underground illusion
Tricking you from side to side

We knew all the answers
And we shouted them like anthems
Anxious and suspicious
That God knew how much we cheated

It can't come quickly enough
And now you've spent your life
Waiting for this moment
And when you finally saw it come
It passed you by and left you so defeated

Skyscrapers rise between us
Keeping me from finding you
If the concrete architecture
Dissapeared there'd be so few
Of us left to navigate and
Defend ourselves from the tide
It's an underground illusion
Tricking you from side to side

There's no indication of
What we were meant to be
Sucking up to strangers
Throwing wishes to the sea

It can't come quickly enough
And now you've spent your life
Waiting for this moment
And when you finally saw it come
It passed you by and
Left you so defeated

The Smiths - Nowhere Fast

"And when I’m lying in my bed
I think about life
And I think about death
And neither one particularly appeals to me

And if the day came when I felt a
Natural emotion
I’d get such a shock I’d probably lie
In the middle of the street and die
I’d lie down and die..."

alan jackson/roger murrah/keith stegall(that's what the site says anyways :P ) -> Don’t Rock the Jukebox

Dont rock the jukebox
I wanna hear some jones
Cause my heart ain’t ready
For the rolling stones
I don’t feel like rocking
Since my baby’s gone
So don’t rock the jukebox
Play me a country song

Before you drop that quarter
Keep one thing in mind
You got a heartbroke hillbilly
Standing here in line
I’ve been down and lonely
Ever since she left
Before you punch that number
May I make one request

Dont rock the jukebox
I wanna hear some jones
Cause my heart ain’t ready
For the rolling stones
I don’t feel like rocking
Since my baby’s gone
So don’t rock the jukebox
Play me a country song

I ain’t got nothing
Against rock and roll
But when your heart’s been broken
You need a song that’s slow
There ain’t nothing like a steel guitar
To drown a memory
Before you spend your money baby
Play a song for me

Dont rock the jukebox
I wanna hear some jones
Cause my heart ain’t ready
For the rolling stones
I don’t feel like rocking
Since my baby’s gone
So don’t rock the jukebox
Play me a country song
Dont rock the jukebox
Play me a country song

Kate Bush - Army Dreamers

Our little army boy
Is coming home from B.F.P.O
I’ve a bunch of purple flowers
To decorate a mammy’s hero

Mourning in the aerodrome
The weather warmer, he is colder
Four men in uniform
To carry home my little soldier

(What could he do?
Should have been a rock star)
But he didn’t have the money for a guitar
(What could he do?
Should have been a politician)
But he never had a proper education
(What could he do?
Should have been a father)
But he never even made it to his twenties
What a waste --
Army dreamers
Ooh, what a waste of
Army dreamers

Tears o’er a tin box
Oh Jesus Christ, he wasn’t to know
Like a chicken with a fox
He couldn’t win the war with ego

Give the kid the pick of pips
And give him all your stripes and ribbons
Now he’s sitting in his hole
He might as well have buttons and bows

(What could he do?
Should have been a rock star)
But he didn’t have the money for a guitar
(What could he do?
Should have been a politician)
But he never had a proper education
(What could he do?
Should have been a father)
But he never even made it to his twenties
What a waste --
Army dreamers
Ooh, what a waste of
Army dreamers
Ooh, what a waste of all that
Army dreamers
Army dreamers
Army dreamers, oh...

Merle Haggard  -> Mama Tried

The first thing I remember knowing,
Was a lonesome whistle blowing,
And a young un's dream of growing up to ride;
On a freight train leaving town,
Not knowing where I'm bound,
No-one could change my mind but Mama tried.
One and only rebel child,
From a family, meek and mild:
My Mama seemed to know what lay in store.
Despite all my Sunday learning,
Towards the bad, I kept on turning.
'Til Mama couldn't hold me anymore.

And I turned twenty-one in prison doing life without parole.
No-one could steer me right but Mama tried, Mama tried.
Mama tried to raise me better, but her pleading, I denied.
That leaves only me to blame 'cos Mama tried.

Instrumental break.

Dear old Daddy, rest his soul,
Left my Mom a heavy load;
She tried so very hard to fill his shoes.
Working hours without rest,
Wanted me to have the best.
She tried to raise me right but I refused.

And I turned twenty-one in prison doing life without parole.
No-one could steer me right but Mama tried, Mama tried.
Mama tried to raise me better, but her pleading, I denied.
That leaves only me to blame 'cos Mama tried.

Ray Stevens -> Bad Little Boy

Thanksgiving is all over and my dad put up the tree
Looks like a merry Christmas for everyone - but me
'Cause I ain't gettin' nothin' this Christmas
Not even one little toy
They say I ain't gettin' nothin' at all this Christmas
'cause I've been a bad little boy
My mommy screamed when she found my pet gerbil
in my little baby sister's basinette
They say my little baby sister has a soft spot in her head
but I haven't found it - yet
And dad yelled just cause I took the ridin' mower
for a little trip down to the candy store
And my big brother Brett, boy did he get upset
when I told mom about the magazines in his bottom drawer
So, I ain't gettin' nothin' this Christmas
and last christmas I was everybody's pride and joy
But they say I ain't gettin' nothin' at all this Christmas
'cause I've been a bad little boy
I was hopin' I might get a chemistry set or a motorcycle
or something like that
But that's before I used Brett's model rocket set
and made an astronaut out of Miss Wilcox's cat
Stupid cat
If he'da just held on tight like I told him
I wouldn'a had to super glue his little paws to the rocket
Yeah, if he'da just been still like I told him
he wouldn'a thrown the rocket off course
and he wouldn'a landed in Butch the bull dog's back yard
Stupid cat
But did the cat get in trouble? noooo! but
Hey, I ain't gettin' nothin' this Christmas
Not even one little toy
They all say I ain't gettin' nothin' this Christmas
'cause I've been a bad little boy
Oh, my grandma had to go to the hospital
Yeah, but don't worry, she's not really sick
She just had a little trouble walking for awhile
after I showed her my Power Ranger kick
So, I ain't gettin' nothin' this Christmas
not from mom or dad or brett or Grandma
They all say I ain't gettin' nothin' at all this Christmas
but they don't know my grandpa!
My grandpa'd give me anything I want I bet
"Boys will be boys," that's what Grandpa says
"Lighten up bill, he's just a little kid!"
My grandpa calls my dad "Bill!"
I just hope my grandpa doesn't find out
who took his Great Big Bertha golf clubs though
It's true what they say about the Great Big Bertha
I can hit a rock farther with a Great Big Bertha
than with any of my dad's golf clubs
Even with the big dents I put in it
That rock just goes and goes
One rock went through Miss Wilcox's window
Wish it'da hit that stupid cat
I hate that cat

Blue Öyster Cult - (Don't Fear) The Reaper

All our times have come
Here but now they're gone
Seasons don't fear the reaper
Nor do the wind, the sun or the rain..we can be like they are
Come on baby...don't fear the reaper
Baby take my hand...don't fear the reaper
We'll be able to fly...don't fear the reaper
Baby I'm your man...

Valentine is done
Here but now they're gone
Romeo and Juliet
Are together in eternity...Romeo and Juliet
40,000 men and women everyday...Like Romeo and Juliet
40,000 men and women everyday...Redefine happiness
Another 40,000 coming everyday...We can be like they are
Come on baby...don't fear the reaper
Baby take my hand...don't fear the reaper
We'll be able to fly...don't fear the reaper
Baby I'm your man...

Love of two is one
Here but now they're gone
Came the last night of sadness
And it was clear she couldn't go on
Then the door was open and the wind appeared
The candles blew then disappeared
The curtains flew then he appeared...saying don't be afraid
Come on baby...and she had no fear
And she ran to him...then they started to fly
They looked backward and said goodby...she had become like they are
She had taken his hand...she had become like they are
Come on baby...don't fear the reaper

I'm not really sure why, but I'm really into this song right now. I first heard it quite a long time ago and I liked it then, but for some reason I've started appreciating it a lot more recently. It's an awsome song by an awesome band, IMHO, and it has become one of my all-time favorites. I find its lyrics, especially the way they are sung, hauntingly beautiful, and it has a kick-ass heavy guitar solo (well, maybe not a solo per se) that breaks the chorus in two very nicely. A kind of "interlude", I guess.

Needless to say, the song is very dark lyrically (a common trait of BOC's songs), which for me only adds to its appeal. There's a kind of intriguing mysticism to it, I would say. The band member who wrote it, Donald Roeser a.k.a. Buck Dharma, who is also the lead guitarist and possibly the most talented of the group, has denied that it has anything to do with suicide. I find that a little hard to fathom myself; the allusions to suicide seem a little too obvious for him to have not intentionally included them. I mean, for what other reason would you refer to Romeo and Juliet in a song themed on death other than to elicit the notion of suicide in the listeners? It's actually kind of funny though, because I have come upon certain forums where people were arguing incessantly about this very issue, yet neither side ever concedes anything to the other! So much for the purpose of debate (unless it's merely for the entertainment of eaves-droppers like me). ;P

Here's a little pointless trivia: Blue Öyster Cult was the first band to ever implement the "umlaut" symbol in its logo, setting off a trend for later heavy metal bands. This novel usage of the umlaut as mere ornamentation for a band name eventually became so over-used that the diacritic has become somewhat of a cliché. This is probably best exemplified in the (hilarious) 1984 parody flick This Is Spinal Tap, which follows the exploits of a fictitious heavy metal band as they go on tour.

And on the subject I also found this, an interesting article in PDF format (you'll need Adobe Acrobat Reader to see it) by a guy named Bruce Campbell. Unfortunately I don't think it is the Bruce Campbell, just some unknown (to me at least) writer. It's amazing what you find when using Google, though!

Leonard Cohen - Lover Lover Lover

I asked my father
I said "Father, change my name
The one I'm using now, it's covered up
With fear and filth and cowardice and shame"

Yes and lover, lover, lover, lover, lover, lover,
Lover come back to me
Yes and lover, lover, lover, lover, lover, lover,
Lover come back to me

He said "I locked you in this body
I meant it as a kind of trial
You can use it for a weapon
Or to make some woman smile"

Yes and lover, lover, lover, lover, lover, lover,
Lover come back to me
Yes and lover, lover, lover, lover, lover, lover,
Lover come back to me

"Then let me start again" I cried
"Please let me start again
I want a face that's fair this time
I want a spirit that is calm"

Yes and lover, lover, lover, lover, lover, lover,
Lover come back to me
Yes and lover, lover, lover, lover, lover, lover,
Lover come back to me

"I never turned aside" he said
"And I never walked away
It was you who built the temple
It was you who covered up my face"

Yes and lover, lover, lover, lover, lover, lover,
Lover come back to me
Yes and lover, lover, lover, lover, lover, lover,
Lover come back to me

And may the spirit of this song
May it rise up pure and free
May it be a shield for you
A shield against the enemy

Yes and lover, lover, lover, lover, lover, lover,
Lover come back to me
Yes and lover, lover, lover, lover, lover, lover,
Lover come back to me

Yes and lover, lover, lover, lover, lover, lover,
Lover come back to me
Yes and lover, lover, lover, lover, lover, lover,
Lover come back to me

Merle Travis -> Sixteen Tons

Some people say a man is made outta mud
A poor man's made outta muscle and blood
Muscle and blood and skin and bones
A mind that's a-weak and a back that's strong

You load sixteen tons, what do you get?
Another day older and deeper in debt
saint Peter don't you call me 'cause I can't go
I owe my soul to the company store

I was born one mornin' when the sun didn't shine
I picked up my shovel and I walked to the mine
I loaded sixteen tons of number nine coal
And the straw boss said "Well, a-bless my soul"

You load sixteen tons, what do you get?
Another day older and deeper in debt
saint Peter don't you call me 'cause I can't go
I owe my soul to the company store

I was born one mornin', it was drizzlin' rain
Fightin' and trouble are my middle name
I was raised in the canebrake* by an ol' mama lion
Cain't no-a high-toned woman make me walk the line

You load sixteen tons, what do you get?
Another day older and deeper in debt
saint Peter don't you call me 'cause I can't go
I owe my soul to the company store

If you see me comin', better step aside
A lotta men didn't, a lotta men died
One fist of iron, the other of steel
If the right one don't a-get you, then the left one will

You load sixteen tons, what do you get?
Another day older and deeper in debt
saint Peter don't you call me 'cause I can't go
I owe my soul to the company store

Clark Guy -> Baton Rouge

I'm gonna leave Texarkana
I'm goin' down to Louisiana
I'm gonna try my luck in Baton Rouge
I'm gonna follow ol red river down
Till I see the lights of town I ain't gonna get no sleep in Baton Rouge

Chorus

Baton Rouge Baton Rouge
I'm gonna get me some alligator shoes
Baton Rouge Baton Rouge
I'm gonna wear `em out in Baton Rouge

It was a Texas girl that broke my heart
Then she tore my truck apart
I guess I'll get me another in Baton Rouge
I like Crawfish I like rice
I like girls that treat you nice
I'm gonna find me one in Baton Rouge

Chorus

I'm gonna learn to walk that walk
I'm gonna learn to talk that talk
I'm gonna learn to dance in Baton Rouge
Ain't life just like a cul-de-sac
I'm a Texas boy and I'm goin' back
Soon as I catch my breath in Baton Rouge

Chorus

I'm gonna strut my stuff in Baton Rouge
I'm gonna cool my heels in Baton Rouge
