I read the stickied topic. I wanted to say this happened to me and I don't know if I want to replay everything after now running it as administrator.

1 It should detect you are not are not administrator and warn you at the start.
2 It should allow you to save in a directory where you don't need administrator.

Yeah this issue is actually something that came up as part of a Windows update during development of the game.  Initially there wasn't any problem at all with where the game installed by default, in fact the first three episodes were pretty much fine.  You'd think that Windows would be smart enough to know that if you deliberately installed something in a particular directory you might also have additional files created by that application in the same directory, but Microsoft never really ceases to surprise us.

What I don't understand is why wasn't it found in testing?
Also if it was why wasn't a workaround implemented?

It's been known since Episode 1 that the game doesn't work well if you have UAC on and are not running as an administrator. Fixing that is not a trivial task.

Most of the testers run the game in a directory outside of Program Files to begin with.  There's not a whole tremendous amount of playthrough testing that's done once we create the actual game installer itself - typically at that point we're just running through the game to make sure the creation of the installer itself didn't break anything unexpectedly.  And I can't speak for the other testers for sure but I always run everything as an administrator to begin with.

It would be nice if there were more time for testing the final build, but usually there ends up being a big rush to get everything in before the deadline. That's just the way it goes...

I actually have UAC turned off on my (Vista) computer. It's pretty hard to get legacy code (such as the Torque engine) to play nicely with Vista/Win7. We're in the process of fixing the software I test at work to run on Windows 7, and at least initially, we're requiring UAC off and running as an administrator.
