SOPA

So, in an hour or so, wikipedia is going dark to protest this BS bill.

Thoughts?

I think that's going to have a huge impact.  It will really help people who are currently unaware of what this bill is about to get more involved and educated.  I have serious reservations about the level of control the government is trying to establish with this thing.

Yeah, it's a terrible piece of legislation.  I hope the online boycotts and protests have the intended impact.  As one who is ardently against censorship of any kind (f***, s***, PISS, BALLS, C***, A**!!!), I highly disapprove of this bill.  I'm also kind of irritated that it's resulting in wikipedia going offline--I seriously use that site all the time.  I guess I can live without it for ONE day though.  :)

Edited. And yes, I'm aware of the irony.

I just wish at least Google and Facebook would also go down. That would really cripple the internet and bring some focus to this ridiculous bill. Twitter already said it wouldn't, unfortunately. Reddit is also going down. The Elder Scrolls Wiki is down too with an amusing image, which is not on Wikipedia.

The unfortunate thing about this is non-Americans can't do a thing about it. So don't let us down, you Americans!

Yeah, that would create some MAJOR resonance across the internet.  As it is, I hope people notice.

It would also really show people what could happen if SOPA ever enacted its "right" to take down a website.

So Google isn't down but they have updated their logo with a big black box that links to a great article about SOPA.

I think it and PIPA are both horrible ideas. I'm glad SOPA got shelved, but yeah, even more glad the blackout is still happening. Hell, if SOPA existed? NONE of the Sierra fangames could have happened. Not TSL, not IA's games, AGDI's games...meaning these groups, these forums, the renewed interest in KQ, NONE of those would exist.

So, yeah. f*** that noise!

Though Google isn't in on the blackout, they are speaking out about it and have a page for signing the petition to Congress to speak out against SOPA and PIPA.

I don't agree with it at all. It would contradict what America has said they are about (1st Amendment rights) and the government is trying to seize too much control. I see what they are going after but it's not the right way to go about it.

I'm all for it.  People are way too dirty and unwashed these days.  Time to get busy with a good old-fashioned bar, and get it all clean.

I, for one, am surprised by how many people are against this bill. I was against it before I even educated myself about it. Just the idea of the government violating the internet leaves a funny taste in my mouth. But Google, Wikipedia, and even people on Youtube are expressing their voice against the bills, and I support the angst. I was just blown away that even video game developers, like Frozenbyte, are admitting that SOPA and PIPA would ruin the industry as well as the internet. Anyway, here's to an internet that will remain free from the government's grasp. Cheers!

Has anyone implemented an "are you a human" qualification for signing up for the forums? Maybe having to get your first post approved by a moderator before it's posted?

Moderator approval is annoying. Not just for the community but for the admin team as well. The best and least annoying thing is to do email verification with the latest Captcha plugins. These guys still slip through, though. However, if I were a moderator I'd rather just delete and ban the odd spam account every now and then instead of approve every single members' first post who joins.

Moderator approval WOULD be a pain in the arse. We do have a captcha, I believe, but spambots are surprisingly good at getting past those. And no one on the team right now has the know-how to work on improving the spam filters, so....we get invaded on occasion.
