Okay, by "recent" I meant "within the last 5 years." Sanitarium broke that by 1 year, but since I still see it for sale at Best Buy and Wal-Mart, I included it. I guess Grim Fandango can count too. I'm talking about games you can actually buy at a store without having to drag the bargain bins. I know it's been awhile, but adventure games used to be on shelves too, and nowadays they're making it back there.
As for myself, I voted for Broken Sword. That game was just awesome in all sorts of levels. Definitely the best adventure game to come along in years. As for others, I recommend "The Black Mirror." It's got a bit of a different flavor to it, but it's a traditional pure adventure game and the story is okay enough.
Don't let games like Myst scare you away from buying new adventures, though. One of the main reasons they don't make new ones is because people don't buy them anymore. If you buy good ones like Broken Sword, then the market will begin to show some improvement.
Also, if you want to include good original freeware fangames (that is, not based on existing franchises), those are admissable too.
