In one version of Cinderella, the evil stepsisters cut off pieces of their own foot to make the glass slipper fit. This plan was foiled when a couple of pidgeons peck their eyes out.

Oh God. XD I remember that book. :P We had a very graphically illustrated version. It wasn't just that he sucked his thumb though, it was also that he refused to wash or cut his hair or nails. :S

The dirty guy was a separate person. Here he's called Jörö-Jukka ("Grumpy-Chuck"). "Struwwelpeter" was the original name according to the Wiki.

I had heard a version where the stepsisters cut their feet to make the slipper fit.  But in the version I've heard, their plan is foiled when their blood drips out of the shoe.

My mistake. :P They were in the same book. They were all really horrible stories. XD It was written in reaction to a lack of good children's books. :P

Grimm doesn't appeal to me, either, and it's the kind of thing that's usually right in my wheelhouse. I watched 3 episodes and it just failed to interest me. The writing and characters and stories just...were not interesting at all to me. Why does he keep it all from his almost-fiancee, you know, the one he almost proposed to in the pilot but then that point got completely dropped? It had neat ideas going for it but just didn't use them well.

Hahahaa! Great stuff, I remember in the version we had it was mentioned in the last verse that now he can't be a goalie, since he can't hold a ball.

A girl who plays with matches and burns herself to death (the picture with the cats crying around her ashes is priceless), a fat kid who starwes to death because he refuses to eat soup and a restless kid who dies by falling down with the chair at a dinner table. This is the stuff my parents read me before bedtime.

It was one of the books I used to learn to read that font, so I have both fond and horrified memories of it. :P

I'm addicted to Grimm.  It's like eating crappy food.  One part of you tells you it sucks, but another says DELICIOUS.  EAT ALL OF THE FOOD.

The only reality tv I can watch without headdesking is 16 & Pregnant. XD But that's because it's so tragically horrific and stupid and no amount of headdesking would be adequate. XD :D Also, their grasp of the English language is really terrible. XD

Why does everyone insist that Kristen Stewart is bland?  She has a huge range of emotions, as evidenced by the following scientific diagram:

LOL. To be honest, those look like post-makeup shots for her birth scenes in Breaking Dawn.

Well, she could be a student of Aki KAurismäki-style of acting, don't say or do anything unless told to and always remember to talk in that stilted standard language that makes him the favorite of film critics.

Or then she could just be doing some kind of minimalistic version of Stanislavski, with what's happening inside being more important than the exterior. I'd love to see her trying to drive a bicycle like she was in love.

Has anyone seen any articles about why fairy tales are so popular right now? Usually there's some sort of socio-economic reason that someone has outlined in an article, and while I usually disagree I'm always interested to read them.

I have to say that I actually kind of like these darker takes on fairy tales. As for the print versions, I've only ever been exposed to the disney versions. Being born in 1991 and all, I grew up with Disney. We didn't have these dark versions. It's interesting to discover how truly dark and twisted this stuff really is. I'll never think of Sleeping Beauty the same way again after that blurb posted earlier...

I think how much I enjoy the "dark" fairy tales depends on how well they are pulled off.  For every dark fairy tale out there that's actually good, there are several "Red Riding Hood"-esque crapfests to swing the pendulum back into mediocrity.

Take the Dark Knight film.  (Yes, I know it was a superhero movie and not a fairy tale flick, but the point remains.)  It was as much of a superhero movie as it was a thriller, and it managed to balance out both acts quite well, hence its critical acclaim.  Now, compare that to, say, Twilight.  It's like they're trying to be dark and psychological, but the execution fails miserably.

Or how about we compare this to a more relevant medium, such as TSL?  The folks over at IA have made it very clear that they don't really enjoy King's Quest being "dark," or at least in TSL's execution of said "darkness."

Amusingly enough, it seems they're just fine with Mask of Eternity's "violent darkness", in that the game allows you to literally decapitate opponents with your bare hands, yet they take exception to TSL's "moody darkness," namely, watching a spiky-haired Alexander standing outside of a Gothic Castle of the Crown, screaming "Cuh-SEEM-AHH!" at the top of his lungs.
I have no mouth, and I must scream.

Deloria

Gothic Castle of the Crown? I take exception to that. :P It's really more Arabian than anything else. Gothic things have spires.

QuoteVathek (alternatively titled Vathek, an Arabian Tale or The History of the Caliph Vathek) is a Gothic novel written by William Beckford. ... Vathek capitalised on the 18th (and early 19th) century obsession with all things Oriental (see Orientalism), which was inspired by Antoine Galland's translation of The Arabian Nights

Arabian things can be very gothic ;)
