Dorothy and the Witches of Oz

Why is that? I'm curious. Also, what are the exceptions (and why)?

I mean, there are a lot of different kinds of musicals--from cheesy, to classic Rodgers & Hammerstein, to modern musicals, to operas, etc.

Well, the one main exception is Were the World Mine, which is a gay-themed movie. A kid discovers a love potion written within A Mid Summer Night's Dream, and uses it on everyone in town. Generally, I dislike musicals because they defy the constructs of reality. I'm not saying a movie has to be entirely realistic, but it has to be able to pull me in to it's fantasy world. When people randomly start singing, it just brings me back to reality. I don't care how good or iconic the songs are, whenever someone in a movie starts singing in an out of context way like in musicals, I'm hurled back to the movie theater or my living room. Were the World Mine actually had a little bit of mystery to it; sure, it was definitely a musical, but almost all of the songs occurred during dream-like sequences, and the ones that didn't actually fit the context of the movie. Furthermore, one of the characters was so damn mysterious that I still wonder about her today. How did she know the things she did?

I suppose another reason I'm not big into musicals is because I never got big into music in the first place. I know coming from a gay guy that's almost blasphemy, but my taste in music is limited and, according to almost all of my friends, very poor. I was *NEVER* a fan of showtunes or the like. Another exception for me is Glee (if that counts), though it's quickly starting to lose it's luster for me. the first two seasons were great, but now I find myself not sure I want to continue it. I started watching it not for the music, but for Sue Sylvester alone. She's one of the defining characters for me.

I love "Return To Oz".

I think it's a cool flick - great special effects and puppetry from the Jim Henson guys.... the story is kind of dark and interesting.  The flick scared the hell out of me as a kid - especially Mombi and all her heads!  Also, the claymation by Will Vinton for the Gnome King is amazing.... watching it now, it still looks awesome.  (Will Vinton did The Noid for Dominos and The California Raisins, if I recall correctly.)   

I enjoyed that one, too! It's a combination of two or three of the books with some original material tying it all together. Interestingly, in the original, Ozma wasn't imprisoned; Mombi turned her into a boy as an infant - so (s)he didn't know who (s)he actually was.

True that! Someone actually told me a couple of weeks ago that I have a great suspension of disbelief. I never really thought about it, but I guess I do.

I´ve seen the serie/movie Dorothy and the Witches of Oz.
I´ve got the dvd at home. Must say I like(d) it.
