Ok, so I just found this on Apple Trailers. Apparently there's a new Wizard of Oz movie coming out on February 17th, and I've never heard of it until now. I know there are already two other Wizard of Oz movies in the works (one by disney, which may or may not have Tim Burton involved; I can't remember), but this comes as a complete surprise. Based on the URL, it appears to be an independent movie, but I may just see it if I can. It looks cool to me. Let me know what you all think of it. Again, this caught me completely off guard, but pleasantly so.

Huh. It kinda looks more like a Syfy movie with better production values than a theatrical release movie.

I have to wonder if it'll actually be released in my area or not. If it is independent, then it may not reach my area. I guess we'll find out on the 17th, won't we?

I take it you're not a fan of 3D? I like 3D to a degree. I can see a movie either way and it doesn't change my opinion. Except for The Last Airbender. That movie was worse with 3D. I don't know how it's possible, but it is.

Ok, good point. But I'm still planning on seeing it. For the record, I'm not actually a big fan of the original Wizard of Oz movie. Don't get me wrong, it was a good movie and it certainly deserves it's place in the hall of fame, but I just never got too into it. That's why I'm ok with sequels and retellings of it. I know, I'm a terrible person for saying that, but it's the truth. Lynch me if you choose.

Enchanted did the "In New York!" thing well, because they were playing the entire genre cliches for laugh thing to the hilt. Other than that, "In New York!" is always always ALWAYS a FAIL formula.

I mean, if only for WHY is it always New York? Go somewhere else for once! Sheesh!

And when I think of "Oz" I always think of the L. Frank Baum books. The guy was from a small town near where I grew up - they have a festival every year honoring him. I've grown up with the books.

I wouldn't be opposed to something about Dorothy Gale being revisited by her experiences in Oz as a grown-up; Return to Oz touched on this only as a few years later, when she was still really a girl, and it was kind of fascinating for it. No one seems to want to do Dorothy grown-up but ALSO having been the girl from the original stories. "Tin Man" eschewed that idea, and also was just plain awful (it confirmed that I don't like Zoey Deschanel...except, oddly, for New Girl. I really like that show and even her in it, but otherwise I can't stand her! She's got dead eyes!). This one looks like it's doing the same thing, Dorothy is a grown u, but not the Dorothy from the books. I think...it's hard to tell, honestly, from this trailer.

My wife and sisters loved Tin Man. A lot. Never watched through it myself. A steampunk sequel to Wizard of Oz...just WEIRD.

I haven't watched a lot of movies in 3D, so I don't know. I do think it's become way too much of a gimmick lately, though.

Me, too! The movie really didn't compare at all. I got the whole collection (Baum's books only) for my Kindle for less than a dollar.

3D in movies makes everything darker and the flickering can get to you after a while. I can't stand it when movies are ONLY in 3D in theatres. At least offer the choice.

I'm going to go on record and probably gain the hate of everyone here, but I honestly preferred the movie Return to Oz over the original Wizard of Oz. I suppose it's because Wizard of Oz is so highly regarded as one of the greatest movies in cinema history, and then I discover a not-well-known sequel hiding in the corner of a blockbuster. The sequel just isn't as widely known (or at least not that I can tell), and I think that's part of the reason why I like it so much. But I'm probably a terrible person for saying that. Some people have told me the sequel was awful. Perhaps it was; I enjoyed it though. A bad movie doesn't mean I won't enjoy it

Hah, well, I don't hate you for that!

I love "Return To Oz". It's been on HBO and Showtime lately, too. I've seen it twice in the past month.

I think it's a cool flick - great special effects and puppetry from the Jim Henson guys.... the story is kind of dark and interesting. The flick scared the hell out of me as a kid - especially Mombi and all her heads! Also, the claymation by Will Vinton for the Gnome King is amazing.... watching it now, it still looks awesome. (Will Vinton did The Noid for Dominos and The California Raisins, if I recall correctly.)

I don't like it better than "The Wizard of Oz", per se - it's just a completely different kind of film. The Wizard of Oz was a musical.... this is a straight movie. It's a "sequel" really, only because it takes place in Oz after the Wizard of Oz, but it was produced by a totally different studio. In fact, Disney had to MGM for the rights to use Ruby Slippers in it, as those were an invention of the 1939 MGM film.

If anyone hasn't seen it, I reccomend that they check it out.

I'm still afraid for this steaming pile of moose crap that is about to come out, though.

Return to Oz is great. I haven't seen it in years, but I also like how it blended the whimsy and creepiness really well.

Yeah, the beginning of the movie was a little creepy for me as a kid. But yeah, I loved the movie. In fact, I want to watch it now. I just need to find a copy of it somewhere...

I'm also going to go on record and say that I despise musicals, which is one of the biggest reasons why I don't like The Wizard of Oz much. I can't stand musicals. There are like, two exceptions. If that.
