Seems like Timur is returning to his roots.

And it's based on a book!

Any relation to Pride and Prejudice and Zombies?

It looks ridiculous and awesome. :)

I'm a little surprised that this is being made into a movie before P&P&Z, though.

ETA: Ah--now I see why. According to its wikipedia page, there have been production issues, namely a lot of peopple coming into but then leaving the project.

My best friend has been going gaga over this. She is hell-bent on seeing it, and I'll be right there along with her. She loved the book, apparently. Incidentally, Tim Burton is one of her biggest inspirations in life. She loves everything he's done.

sooooooooooooo... the spambot brought me back to this thread... XD

... and I remembered just how much I don't even regarding this movie concept... ...yeah...

...though it occurs to me that it IS something I could get behind as a response to True Blood XD ("Mr. Lincoln--the South is full of vampires speaking poorly!" "*puts on stove top hat* Well, son, looks like we're going to war." XD XD)

I was somewhat intrigued by True Blood right up until the point other supernaturals turned up and then I had a -_- moment. Until then I'd been mistakenly watching it as an allegory for racial tensions in the 1950's and thought it did that extremely well. :P So, so disappointed when werewolves turned up. And werepanthers. And gods. And faeries. ::)

I forget if it's True Blood or something else, but there is a pop vampire setting that is just allegory for homosexuals (ie- treatment of the vampires is allegorical for treatment of homosexuals)... I imagine it's True Blood as it has more or less the right elements.

I think you may be right. :P I suspect the reason I thought it was racial was because there seemed to be a few scenarios in which it couldn't be translated to homosexuality (e.g. refusing to serve someone at a bar).

Damar

Vampires have always been a symbol for societal fears.  The original folkloric vampires were fears of threatening the common good of the community, from water, to cattle, to children, to luck in general.  The book Dracula was a racist little story in which Dracula was the symbol of evolutionary atavism as well as a technologically backwards and an invading force against the pure, English way.  He ruins poor Lucy Westernra (the name meaning light of the west) and is eventually taken down by an Englishman and his band of others from Protestant countries allied with England.  Then you have Carmillia and it playing to the fear of close female friendship turning into homosexuality.  As far as the movies, Nosferatu doesn't even overtly suck blood, but he does bring petulance and during the time the movie was made, there was an outbreak of disease.  Dracula with Bela Lugosi also didn't do a whole lot of blood sucking.  He was more into mesmerizing, as psychology was becoming a bigger thing.  Blade is pretty clearly an allegory for AIDS.  So yeah, it's all about societal taboos.
