According to an article on Kotaku (originally from The Verge), Valve may be getting ready to announce a console either next week at GDC or at E3 in June. My interest has been piqued. My bank account is so going to hate me if this is true. What do you all think? Would any of you buy a Valve console?

I've been reading about Gabe being particularly interested in tablets and "wearable computers/devices" lately. He plainly had said something like "Ideally we'd like to use something already made, but if it comes to the point where we need to make something we will."

If they do release a console of sorts at least we can be sure it'll be open source. (no pun intended)

I've long wanted a fourth company to get in on the hardware business; the big three are becoming predictable, and I wanted a fourth to come in and shake things up. I have to admit, I never expected Valve to be that company. I was thinking EA or Activision as the most likely, and possibly Apple.

Err, Apple really already ARE in the market with their iOS devices. Those games are making a killing. It's a proven gaming platform and even Steam is starting to support portable devices.

As much as I like the iOS devices, I think the industry needs a shake-up. I'd like to get an iPad, but it seems like the gaming aspect of the device is shaded by the more gimmicky titles, like Angry Birds and Words with Friends. I've seen what the iPad can do, and I'm impressed, but I still see it as being "held back" as a gaming device.

That's probably because most of the games developed for them are casual on purpose. I guess developers figure people will spend more time overall on a game that they can whip out and fool around with quickly every now and then rather than play a whole complex storyline puzzle/adventure game or even a triple-A FPS or action game. And I tend to agree, actually. I used to do that when I was a kid with the Game Boy and whatnot but these days I just find handheld devices too small to dedicate to full blown developed titles. Beforehand these games had big pixels and were easy on the eyes. It's just not the same anymore. I'd rather spend a lot of time on a full length game on my computer than on a handheld device. But that's me.

Holy crap. When can I buy that; it looks amazing!

When I mentioned apple earlier, I meant in the home console space. I want a fourth company to come in and shake up the console market. I'm not concerned about the handheld market right now.

And when it comes to handheld gaming, I'm looking more for a console experience on a handheld. I think the Vita and (possibly) the 3DS can deliver on this. A lot of games are designed to be mobile, but that's not what I want. With the sheer power of today's handheld devices, there's so much more that can be done. Imagine Pikmin on the 3DS (which, honestly, why hasn't that been done yet? Seriously), or Infamous on the Vita. Don't get me wrong, the mobile games are certainly fun and addictive, but I want something more.

Oh, now that's what I'm talking about. Looks awesome, I'll have to keep an eye out for that one.

Understood. Everyone in my family has a smart phone now, and the rest of my family are into those quick and casual games. But for me, I've seen the potential, and am not sold on the gimmicks. If that's where the market is, believe me, I understand why. I just feel like the devices are being marketed as a "tool" rather than an actual gaming device. It'd be like Sony putting all the bells and whistles into a PS3, and then only marketing the system to the people who would buy Angry Birds. It's the reason why companies like Sony and Microsoft affiliate with first-party studios: to show what their system can do. Apple isn't doing this. They realize that they struck a gold mine, now they're just profiting off of it, rather than investing in it. Which may be the smarter move, but it's hard to tell.
