Hmm.

Great commerical games that have become freeware:

Star Control 2
Awesome, awesome game. Manages to combine adventure, space shooter, strategy, RPG, serious story-telling, and wacky humor all into one package. Best soundtrack ever, too.

Beneath a Steel Sky
A British cyberpunk adventure game. Not the best adventure ever, but a good, solid game, nice plot and lots of kooky, dry British humor.

(Note: I recommend downloading the SCUMMVM emulator itself as well, since BASS on its own *really* does not work well under any brand of Windows.)

Stuff that originated as freeware:

Scorched Earth
OK, this is technically shareware, but the unregistered version is completely playable.

The premise is simple... you get a little tank. You buy weapons and shields for your tank. You then activate your defenses, choose your power and firing angle, and let fly with one shot each turn to try and hit your opponent. The graphics are simple, too. And yet, it's addictingly fun.

Peace & Luv, Liz

Keep trying!  When I wanted to download it, they were using some script that would randomly forward your request to one of their mirrors.  Eventually you'll find a link that works. :)

Truth is, I have a slight problem remembering which games are free and which are not... I wonder why :P

I was looking for freewares when I found another fan "remake" I knew nothing about. That's my favourite LSL game... I should really read adventure games news more often :P

Yonkey -
Feel free to remove the link if you consider this abandonware. They regard it as a fan-made remake :-\

Hmm, if it's a remake being intentionally distributed for free by the authors, then I don't see any problems with linking to it.  It probably would fall under the same category as KQ1+.  8)

And yes, it's a Point & Click remake with the rest of the game staying the same 8)

IIRC, there was a link to that game in an Inventory Issue (don't remember which one). Come to think of it, I've still not unzipped Issue 15! :o
Anyway, I've already finished that LSL2-remake, been a long time since I played LSL2 and I'm not quite sure it'll run on XP Home (the remake does.

Use DOSbox. It makes most,if not all, DOS games/programs work in XP/Linux/9x/ME/2000/NT/etc.

Actually, now that I'm playing it, it's not exactly the same... I don't remember The Cranberries songs playing in the original's barbershops ;)

Here's a way to get any video game free(it's legal). Video game patents(in the US) become void after 75 years. So find a game you like, wait 75 years, and then find it again, heh.

I probably should have posted the link to all the Sega demos. Here are the Japanese PC demos. Including Crazy Taxi3, Typing of the Dead2004, and Sonic AdventureDX. Before somone asks, you can play TotD with an english keyboard(don't know about others). I don't know if all of them will work on a non-japanese OS, but many can.

Sega Game Demos

After looking around a bit, I found out the difference between version A and B(SonicDX). I also decided that most of the people here, either wouldn't care about the demo, or wouldn't play the japanese version. Here's an english site.
