Just curious to see if anybody has played these games. I've heard people refer to them before ideologically as the best RPGs of all time (w/ minor bugs). I find it hard to believe that something so great would be plagued with bugs, but then again, I don't know what I'm missing. The only thing I have played that is relatively close to Gothic is the demo for ArcaniA, which the Gothic fans have boycotted due to it being made by a separate developer. I also played the demo for Risen (which was made by the original Gothic developers). But I've never played a Gothic game. I also see the entire Gothic collection on sale on Steam a lot. So it got me thinking that there had to be something to it. Has anybody played it, and if you have, is it any good? Also, when confronting the bugs, are there any deal breakers, or is a lot of the bugs fixed with community patches?

From reading the summary on Steam, the story sounds quite interesting, but a story isn't much if the game is broken.

In my experience it is hard to deal with glitchy games without a pair of rose tinted shades.

I agree, but there's always diamonds in the rough. I'm not expecting a game to be perfect, but a game can still be enjoyable underneath all of the bugs and glitches. I had a very glitched game of Fallout 3, but it didn't stop me from completing the game to its fullest. Also, I played Vampire: The Masquerade - Bloodlines, and that game had a lot of glitches, but still, I was able to beat the game with enough enthusiasm to play the game again as a different character. Regardless, if the game were truly unplayable or had enough bugs to drive a sane man mad, I'd like to get an idea first. But the fact that the series is infamous for having a lot of glitches but is still hailed as one of the best RPGs to date, it begs the question, "Why?" I was reluctant to get Vampire for the very same reason, but I am glad I jumped right in.

The difference is that Fallout 3 and VTMB are two of the best games ever made. :P

I guess on that note I should ask if the Gothic series has a dedicated fanbase.  Fanpatches for VTMB are an absolute must.

Oh, I definitely agree. I tried to play the game without the patch one time, and the game was really fuzzy, and the menu display was near incomprehensible. The fanpatches are a definite must.
