As long as it's clear what's happening, the German can provide a nice Bilingual Bonus, but don't ever make it so the conversation doesn't make sense without knowledge of both languages.

That's what I'm doing for Quest for Glory actually: slipping in some German into my Heroes' speech.

btw, hey writerlove, did you ever find out the name of Herbert's kingdom? I'm THINKING it's Grey because it's used more than once, whereas Grew is used only once, but I just want to make sure.

Yay! Finally at the Swarthy Hog Inn! guess what, I gave Cedric a full name.

Cedric Archimedes Shannon. "kindly and loved", "contemplating, pondering", and "wise little owl"

As for Graham, I thought of one for him too (although I'm not sure if I'm gonna use it anywhere)

Graham Joshua Victor. Josh Mandel and Jason Michael Victor respectfully.

crayauchtin

He's Herbert of Greys.

Ooops, totally forgot about that. Sorry :( I'll have to go back in the article and fix that error. A new Four Winds article is coming today, though. I will say that :)

Fun fact: Dynasties and locations are not always the same! :D His name could be Herbert of Greys and he could rule Grew. :P

Thanks!

-Hmm... should I translate the toymakers lines into actual German just for fun? (yes, Cedric would understand that
But would the readers understand it? Or is that not important?
I think it really depends on how well you speak it. I'd veer away from just using Google Translate or Babelfish because that won't seem at all authentic.

What about the "Translate" option on Microsoft Word?

What about the "ask-Deloria-to-translate-it-for-you-since-she-is-a-native-German-speaker" option? :P

...Deloria is German? Well, you learn something new every day!

What other languages does she speak?

Rosella

Deloria speaks German, among many other things. She is Swiss unless I'm mistaken. XD

But no, no online translator will reliably convey the meaning of what you're saying. It will generally sound laughably innaccurate, at best, miss the connotation entirely, or, at worst, say something horribly offensive. :P

*sigh* I guess I'll change it back to English for now.

Here are the lines:

Toymaker: (to Cedric)  Guten-Tag, Cedric. Mit einem Auftrag für Herr. Crispin der zauberer?

(my original line was "Guten-Tag, Cedric. On an errand for Herr. Crispin der zauberer?" zauberer, if Quest for Glory didn't explain it, means Wizard/Magician)

Cedric: (to toymaker) Nein, eine Suche Für Einen König tatsächlich, zur Rettung seins Familie.

(my original line was, "No, a Quest for a king actually, to rescue his family.")

Even if you don't speak German, this next line should let you in on what he's talking about: "We need to head for the mountains, but I didn’t bring any money, so…" and he brings out the little gnome's marionette.

I've given the gnome's grandson a name as well: Halberg. An Old Norse name that translates to "rock mountain", and where are gnomes usually found? in mountains or underground or in the forest.

-Wishing she could put in the lyrics to The Bard's Song into her KQ5 fic, but... the album that song came on was released in 1992, and I like to keep my references to 1990 and back, KQ6 and TSL being exceptions.

I think a better question would be what languages does she NOT know? :P (The same goes for Delling.)

Tolkien was a conlanger. :P The only conlang I intend to learn (and that's because I'm elitist and only want to know the best, the true roots, the thing behind all the things) is the PIE reconstruction. ;D

Delling has studied Gaelic, Mandarin, Attic, Latin, English, Spanish, French and dabbled in German.
Deloria has studied Attic, Latin, English, German and French. Delling's accomplishments are considerable. XD

Also known by certain elitists as "true Greek", "proper Greek", "real Greek", "the Greek of tragedies". :P

-THERE ARE IDIOTS IN THE BIG HALL ACROSS THE VILLAGE PLAYING VERY LOUD MUSIC AND HAVING A LIGHT SHOW AND I HAVE TO STUDY IN THE MORNING AND I CAN'T SLEEP AND BREATHING HURTS AND EVERYTHING SUCKS AND PNEUMONIA DOESN'T KILL PEOPLE ANYMORE SO WHY AM I DOING THIS?

*big sigh*

I just want to sleep. XP I so badly want to sleep. XP And I want a cat. XP And I miss you and not using you as a pillow feels weird. :(

Failing all that: I think there should be a purge. It will be known as The Great Delorian Purge and it will wipe all the glamour models, celebutants, reality tv "stars" and people who are famous for being famous and make no contribution to society off the face of the Earth. That's only the first phase though. Maybe then the others will learn not to be stupid, inconsiderate people and more phases won't be necessarily, in which case it will be known as The Tiny But Important Delorian Purge. It's just...celebutantes used to be so much better. XD They made actual contributions; they weren't just people to whom homage was paid in great literary works; they had their own accomplishments and that was why they were considered entitled to the inevitable fame that entertaining great artists gave them. And they weren't necessarily beautiful and yes, sometimes they did say stupid things too, but they were always furthering and nurturing either their own artistic goals or those of someone else. It annoys me to no end I can't be a productive member of society. XP I want to be productive. You know what would be awesome? Enceintment. And I know there are like three people who know what that means and that makes it all so much better because that means there is a very small set of people that know me well enough to know that I want this to be a bigger deal than it is because it deserves to be meaningful. And that means I have to really, really want it for it to be meaningful. XP Shall I say it in Greek? I wish I could but the Classical world seems to be more centered on the sequition so vocabulary is sadly lacking. See, I just made up the word "sequition" because English invariably bastardises everything ("sequitur" was perfectly fine with all the definitions it had in Latin, thank you) sooner or later because people keep doing really terrible things to language. And I like language.
f
I sent off insurance papers today. I'm getting money for being vegetative. Woo. So now I'm going to buy 19th century diamonds. To keep them safe. And loved. To make sure they're not melted down because they're not valuable on modern markets anymore. And because preserving beautiful things seems to be the only thing I can do with the quite considerable potential someone in my position has. And I used to have so much more. There is a not inconsequential moment when people around you have hurt you to the degree that functioning normally is no longer an option. And it might be this moment whence misunderstood villain tropes come. Revolutionaries would say that it's because deeply shaking the foundations of things that are considered immovable is the only way to enact social change. Frankly though, we all know it's just about exacting revenge and trying to destroy the thing that hurt you by making sure you've impacted the lives of others living within that social structure as negatively and as much as the social structure has yours. Maybe there's even an immortality component. Because most fame comes from people living in and succeeding in a societal construct. Attaining it without being a part of it would make a mockery not only of the system, but of all those who've achieved fame within it. Unfortunately, most people are really too empathetic to appreciate this on any other level than possibly misplaced moral outrage.

This post exists because of a combination of dextromethorphan, idiots, very loud music, grapefruit juice and opiates and far too much literature. I wouldn't recommend it to anyone.

Okay, so German is a declined language. Meaning you're never going to make any sense with an automated translator because it won't be able to recognise the functions of the words in the sentence and that's important because German nouns and adjectives and pronouns have different endings depending on what place they have in the sentence. :) And you're going to have to clarify whether the toymaker is inquiring as to whether Cedric is there because Crispin has an errand for the toymaker or whether Cedric has been sent on an errand before I can do anything.

Gosh, though... how am I going to post this on here? It's running at 44 pages now!!!
