Uhhh... SIR CRAY! They took EVERYTHING, bag and all! Why would they leave the book (or his wand) behind? Even if they don't know he's a mage, you could hurt someone with that back whacking them over the head or poking them with it.

...I didn't even read the entire message... now I feel bad 'cause I felt I was snapping at you. :(

Hope you feel better soon, buddy!

Wait... IS it possible to perform magic without a wand or staff or book in the King's Quest world?

I should look that up.

Apparently not, unless Cedric secretly knows Iconomancy. Crap.

Again, I'm shocked that I got no reaction from giving Graham and Cedric full names.

crayauchtin

Iconomancy uses a wand, but Alexander has no wand in KQ6 and manages to do just fine. Also, most of the villains in the game cast spells without wands. Mordack is able to cast spells while you have his wand, Dahlia, Hagatha, the Enchanter/Sorcerer, Malicia, Lucreto, none of them have wands. Manannan in KQ3 is able to cast a spell to kill you if you have his wand (and does so for having his wand).

So, yes, it is possible to cast spells without a wand. Or a book. ;)

You mean the conumdrum I've been confused and annoyed by for the past two days... could be solved THAT easily by remembering King's Quest lore and logic?!

- Need 'spell rhyme' for Cedric's getting out of the locked room.

Yeesh, it's ONE SCENE that's giving me trouble!

*SEVERAL HOURS LATER*

And... after posting my question to a fantasy fiction site, I have some good ones for both the "Unlock" spell and the "Summon/Despel Familiar" spell.

- Is wondering exactly WHAT kind of owl Cedric is. Any owl experts on here? Can anyone tell what he is by my avatar?

- Writing chapter 7, as I've been doing for the past 3-4 days. It's going a bit differently than I was expecting, but it's getting there.

For example, Cedric's plan to get out of the inn:

He and Graham make some noise in the dining room (like tipping over the chest of gold in there) to alert the thieves in the entryway.

They come to see what the noise is all about, and Cedric sends Archimedes (remember that stuffed owl he had? He learned a spell that can turn him into an actual owl and back again) to attack and distract the thieves while they escape.

The problems with this plan come with the fact that I highly doubt Archimedes can keep on attacking them forever, since they are liable to get a hit on him.

And, I was thinking that they could go out the windows, but wouldn't someone see that and drag them back in?

Also, they need to go through the back door because that's where the leg of lamb (and where I'm thinking of putting the pie and beeswax too) is. But, in order to get into the pantry, they need to go through the entryway, which means they have to get past the thieves.

So... how do I solve this?

The cellar goes up to the backroom. Why not make it so the stairs do too? Easy peasy. :P

- I just watched Toegoff's Blind LP of Cognition. In one sitting. It's midnight here, but it was TOTALLY. WORTH. IT! It looks like a great game, and I'm VERY impressed! Keep it up Phoenix!

- *facepalming at Sir Cray's idea. How could I not figure that out?!*

- About to go to bed.

- Thanks! :) I hope you get to enjoy it firsthand, too. :)

Wait... explain what you told me in more detail, Sir Cray. I'm confused on the layout here! They're in the dining room, and there are some stairs that lead up to the guest rooms. How does that connect to the cellar? Another set of stairs they didn't see? Secret passge in the wall?

I would love to try out Cognition myself, but... I have no money, which means I can't try out this OR the GOG QFG collection either, which is killing me!

Working at my wife's parents' house thanks to said white stuff (much easier than trying to work with little kids around).

Also, I just wanted to say, even if the world doesn't end tomorrow (which I don't believe) that I'm VERY happy I found this forum and all you lovely people!

In the game King's Quest V, the stairs from the cellar lead up to the backroom where the back door and the mutton are. You can move the stairs from upstairs into that room too -- or give them two staircases that go upstairs and have one lead down to the backroom.

The upstairs does not connect to the cellar.

Good luck!

Wait... you can outline a fanfic? I thought that was only used for essays.

KatieHal

Aww, thanks GrahamRocks! Im glad you found us and vice versa too :)

Haha, you can outline pretty much anything, actually ;)

I outline my stories, at least generally. I like to have a plan of where my story is going to go and how I will make it get there. In the two I am working on now, I know what will happen in each chapter. One is longer so I only have the next 3 chapters outlined. The other is a Christmas story for someone so the whole story is planned. I just need to write it :P

-Planning Four Winds/TSL stuff. We have some really awesome stuff  upcoming (New article is out, btw! Please go read!)
-Nervous about singing for carols. (You'll find out what that's about. :P)

Already read it! Nice article!
- *sigh* Well, they've got out of the inn, but... I'm afraid I'm starting to lose my touch after that scarily long chapter 6 that took me 4 months to write. I dunno, I just feel that this whole chapter, especially the scene when they finally get out, is kind of... anti-climactic I guess?

I had planned in my head for it to be a bunch of stealthy scenes all in the inn, but ended up being less spectacular than I thought.

Then again, it IS still a Word file so I can still change it. But, I'm not really sure how to change it!

::)

Strange, that's how my sweetie reacts to pretty much everything I say.

As for your question on the breed of owl, I'd say a Great Horned Owl, though they're not usually a flat brown color.  They tend to have the flared feathers that look like horns as well as stripes on their heads.  There's also the Eagle Owls that have those feathers, but they don't tend to show up in North America.  The GHO is common enough in this country, so it's probably your best bet.

I think it's dandruff.   ;D
I've been known to say that. ;D

I spend quite a bit of time clearing the driveway and sidewalk last night, and we only got 4 inches or so. Madison got more like a foot (maybe more).
