At least none of the spam is targeted at me, and if it is, they missed.

What does everyone think about the limit of 500 e-mails a day from each computer and the industry shutting down pcs that are compromised?  In my opinion it is okay because I feel that people need to learn about pcs since they need to learn about cars in order to drive.  A basic pc understanding is good for anyone especially since so many industries require you to use a computer.

Unless the person that owns the PC agrees to it, I'm against it. If I had a VERY important e-mail to send, I wouldn't want it cut off. I think that spam should be illegal, though it might be hard to decide what spam is(legally). If something like what you suggest was done, it should be the internet provider's job.

I haven't gotten any spam yet(I don't use filters), so it's possible to avoid spam, with little PC knowledge.

P.S. If I start getting spam, I'm ready to deal with it.

I would define spam as: unwanted messages whose underlying purpose is generating some form of income either directly or indirectly.

If they made that illegal, I would be really happy. :)  But by that definition, I would consider TV commercials and some movie previews spam as well.  So... I wish good luck to whoever's going to pass Anti-Spam legislation.  :)

People tried that in the US(you'd have to give permision, or they couldn't send you advertisements), but iy failed  :(

Louisiana Night

Yes, KQ9 for example. Over 500 members of the forums. If they decided to e-mail everyone that KQ9 was finished, it would probably be from the same PC, or IP.

Yonkey

lol, yeah I was just about to say that.  In the past week I've sent out slightly over 1000 e-mails (mostly because one day I sent out 480 and a few days later day 526).

Also, when we send out the KQ9 Newsletter, there are over 750 subscribers.  I wouldn't call it spam since we allow people to unsubscribe at any time (and I do the subscriptions and unsubscriptions manually by hand so you don't need to worry).  Still, it would suck for people to have to wait 24 hours to receive an e-mail that's meant to be sent out immediately.

Plus, I don't like the thought of prioritizing recipients (i.e. you belong in the first 500, you belong in the next one) since that's unfair to the others.

The problem is that e-mail isn't always used for spam so putting a distribution restriction is a bit unreasonable, particularly for large companies or websites that send out 500+ e-mails multiple times during one day.

Oh yeah, and Louisiana's correct.  Every e-mail I send out has my IP in the message header, whether I send it from neil.rodrigues@, info@, webmaster@ or anything else.  :)

Aren't there also spammers who spam you just for fun? ???

Speaking of spam and the new cell phone virus from Russia.  Here's another link to check out.  Investigators think the problem may be with the organized Russian mob.

The internet is global, so I doubt anyone could make laws to stop it(spam). All attempts so far, have favored large companys, and I think it's going to stay that way. Unless people start mobs/rebelions/legal wars, because of it(spam).

Jeysie

Almost every restriction on anything hurts legitimate users as much if not more than it hurts criminals. :P The question, as always, is whether the restrictions are less of a hassle than the criminal effects.

I'm willing to bet that most of us here have it easy when it comes to spam. Many of my co-workers get literally hundreds of e-mails a day at their work accounts, as do many people out there with popular websites and such. I get something like a dozen spam e-mails a day, and that's only the stuff that gets through after my ISP does it's server-side filtering.

There's several people who postulate that in a few years e-mail will just become more or less unusable, and we'll all switch to either a new e-mail system, or simply use things like IM. (Which will probably also get subverted by the marketing morons, but at least we'll have a period of usability.)

Some people see it the other way around. That all "snail-mail" will be converted to e-mail. It's already an option, in most of the US.

All snail mail to e-mail --- The Horror -- hopefully not in my lifetime -- I love snail mail and tolerate e-mail

I like both, I use them for different things. If I could only have one, I'd take "normal" mail.
