Cognition will not start in Windows 8 64 bits

Hi,
I just bought and downloaded Cognition from Gamersgate.
The installation seems to be fine on Windows 8 64 bits.
When I start Cognition Windows immediately gives the error message 'Cognition - Episode1.exe' has stopped working.

I don't even have a change to enter the product key.

I tried uninstalling the game and reinstalling it, but to no avail.

Any idea what's happening? Maybe this has something to do with the Securom copy-protection (which I hate by the way..) ?

Yeah the game is not tested or confirmed workable in Windows 8. It's only known to be compatible with Windows XP, Windows Vista, and Windows 7.

That is funny.. until now all my games still run under Windows 8. I know Securom screwed up my computer a couple of times in the past..

Lots of people are installing Windows 8 now (probably because Microsoft offers a very cheap update for download  :))

Any change you will get it working under Windows 8 soon? It would be sad if all those people could not play the game.

Probably not really soon no, I know Unity is planning some updates to make the engine itself compatible with Windows 8 but we'll need some significant time to implement and test something like that.

I haven't really looked at Windows 8 at all myself yet, does it have any kind of compatibility options for running programs? If so it may be worth trying to run it with those set for Windows 7 or earlier to see if that helps.

I tried compatability mode for XP, Vista and Windows 7.
Nothing works.
Maybe a warning on your site would be in place?
Because when I see minimum system requirements ... Windows XP, Vista and Windows 7 I don't think it will not work under windows 8.

By the way.. Windows 8 is completely compatible with Windows 7 on the directx and opengl level.. so I don't understand why it should not work.

Pitty... Suppose I have to ask Gamersgate for a refund then..

Have you tried reinstalling the game or anything like that? If it's not even asking you for the serial then that's actually an issue more on Gamersgate's end than ours as our functionality doesn't kick in until after you've put in the serial to activate the game.

I am going to de-install the game completely. Re-download it from Gamersgate and try a fresh install.
I'll keep you posted.

Hi,
The problem is solved!
After several installs and several reboots the Securom check finally kicked in! I was able to input my serial number and Cognition runs now fine on Windows 8 (I did not play the whole game yet of course :)).

So there seems to be no problem with the game at all, but it was Securom....

For other people who have this problem with Securom in Windows 8 (or the installer from Gamersgate):

- Install the game.
- After the installation the installer asks if you want to launch the game. Don't do that! Even after a reboot I could not start the game anymore and had to reinstall it.
- Reboot the computer (even though the installer does not ask you to).
- After the reboot the game can be started and Securom asks for the serial number.

Now the game runs fine. (And what a nice game it is :))

Sorry for any panic I caused.

André Lubke

Awesome to hear! I'm going to make a little sticky with those steps. Definitely let me know if you get all the way through the game, that'll be great to know that it cooperates with Windows 8!

Done and done, and credited you for the solve, nice work!

Thanks for the credit (really not necessary), but I am busy untangling some wires in a Mausoleum now :)

Until now the game is running fine on 1920x1080 in all the highest graphical settings.

I don't think it will give any problems in Windows 8, but I'll let you know if there are.

André

I promissed to keep you posted. I just finished episode 1 on Windows 8 without any problems.
So it seems that Cognition is compatible with Windows 8.
