How do I get John's Lighter?

Hi all,

I need to get John's lighter so that I can complete the training with Rose.

My understanding is that In order for John to allow me to use the lighter I have to have given him some doughnuts?  Right now he outright refuses to give me the lighter and I cannot for the life of me find a way of getting any doughnuts for him?

What have I missed?
