As some of you might be aware, I'm a pretty big Trekkie. Like, really big. I could not be more ecstatic about the new movie coming out in May. It turns out that the announcement trailer was unleashed upon the Internet about 20 minutes ago. I present to you the first-ever public look at Star Trek: Into Darkness.

Am I the only one who knew that Benedict cumberbatch was in it a year ago? Either way, the trailer is awesome and I can't wait for the movie.

Do not have any interest in Star Trek. Do have interest in Benedict Cumberbatch. What? XD

You know, I've never seen Benedict cumberbatch in anything before. I have yet to see Sherlock (though it is on my list).

Also, from what Ive been able to gather, Benedict cumberbatch is playing Gary Mitchel and not Khan. I think that's actually for the better. Better not to mess with Wrath of Khan.

I think you're correct about that, I remember reading something about them staying away from Khan being the bad guy for this one.

This trailer looks friggin' terrible.  Like an 80s action flick with a few vague nods to the Trek universe.  What a joke.

Yeah, I kind of have to agree.  It looks like a great spectacle action flick.... which is cool, right - but it's not Star Trek.  I kind of feel like they've taken the name and shoe-horned it into something it's not.

Well, a lot of people said that about the last one, and I actually loved that one.  I thought it was pretty much a perfect modernization.  And this one might turn out similarly, who knows?  But the moments they chose to emphasize in that trailer REALLY don't feel like Star Trek at all.  Like, I don't think they could have come up with a trailer that feels LESS like the source material.  This trailer SUCKS BALLS.  hahaha

KatieHal

I enjoyed the trailer--but yeah, it's very action-oriented and not very "Star Trek"-y. Then again, it makes sense they'd go that route with it because hey, people love action flicks, plus what Lamb said, the action got a good reaction in the last movie.

Hopefully, the whole movie isn't like that--trailers are known for lying quite often!

This trailer is an announcement trailer, apparently. The full trailer will premiere during The Hobbit. Personally, as much as I'm happy to have more Star Trek, I really don't like the new universe and direction the franchise has taken. They've completely abandoned the prime universe now, which they've managed to keep going since the 60's. I feel like they could've accomplished a reboot by skipping ahead about a hundred years or so in the prime universe. It worked for TNG, so who's to say it can't work again. I'm happy to have any Star Trek I can get, it's just I'm torn on the new movies. They don't feel like Star Trek to me.

Agree about the trailer. I'm surprised that they managed to make Benedict Cumberbatch seem dull and predictable. I didn't think there was a force in this universe capable of that.

Of course, when he's actually on-screen I have no doubt he will be electric. But still, sucky trailer.

Benedict Cumberbatch is going to be raking in the cash over the next couple years, between this movie and the fact that he's also in the Hobbit films (as Smaug). Am I the only one who doesn't give a crap who he is, as long as he's cool? He could be a time-traveling Lee Harvey Oswald for all I care.

And speaking of Star Trek, I don't think I've seen a fanbase this divided in a while. There are fans who like anything Star Trek, there are those who call foul only on Abrams' movies, there are casual fans who don't see what the big deal is about, there are those who dislike Abrams but hate the odd-numbered Trek films more, there are those that allow themselves to get all butthurt over a teaser trailer, the list goes on.

Nobody's really said that Abrams Trek movie wasn't good (I loved it, in fact), just that this particular trailer does a poor job of evoking the franchise in which it is set.

While I wouldn't say the Abrams movie wasn't good, I wouldn't say it was great. Like I had said previously, I'll take any Star Trek I can get in this day and age, but I would prefer if they had kept the prime universe going. Personally, I don't like the idea of re-casting characters, especially in Star Trek when their all so well defined and memorable.

For what it's worth, the trailer does make this movie look more Dark Knight-esque than Star Trek-esque. Was there a single scene set in, y'know, SPACE, in this trailer?

I think this movie looks like the first one.  It will be very entertaining, but it's not Star Trek.  I may actually end up enjoying this movie more because I won't have the hope that it will be in the style or spirit of Star Trek.  Star Trek is dead and slapping the name and representations of the characters on an action film won't change that.  I really hated the first movie because it destroyed everything I grew up with for no other reason than to just reboot because that's apparently what you do these days.  This one, I'll still hate because I'm determined to be a curmudgeon, but perhaps I can find some enjoyment.

I really hope that Sherlock doesn't play Khan because that role was already done so iconically.  Having him be Gary Mitchel could be interesting and I think that's more likely.  I swear I saw someone who looked like the character Elizabeth Denner (the psychologist who mutated along with Gary in the original episode) in the trailer.  Plus the feel seems to be a divided Starfleet, not Khan returning to rule.  It will be interesting to see if they stick with the original episode concept and mutate Michell or just have him be an overly ambitious officer looking to rule a broken and crippled Federation.  Another interesting choice as a potential villain would be Garth of Izar.  Same concept of a Starfleet officer, this time a hero, who is done in by their own ambitions.  But with Garth it would also reimagine and hopefully redeem a character that was in, for my money, the worst episode of the original series.  It was a really, really bad episode.
