Argue: Why KQ6 is the best KQ game.

It may be an old argument, but at least it provides some discussion. For those who feel KQVI is the best KQ game (I am coming around to it being equally as good as KQV, for different reasons), argue why you feel so.

It is the only game in the series that offers a decent narrative.  Not too mention moon logic puzzles and unbeatable game scenarios are at an all time low for the series.

Plus they hired professional voice actors, something the series apparently had trouble with before and after KQ6.

I also think it has some fantastic locations which are realised with more depth and logic than the typical KQ "just cram some fairytales in there and see what happens" logic. See, for example, the Land of the Dead, Winged Ones culture and the fact that Alhazred is somewhat more complex as a villain than the typical "I am an evil wizard/fairy!" stances of Lolotte, Manannan and Mordack.

I also liked the number of optional puzzles and puzzles with multiple solutions, such as the nightingale thing and whose hair you use to complete a spell. I think this is the direction adventure games should be trying to go, even if KQ6 only did baby-steps.

I also like the fact that most of KQ6 takes place in the same islands. While you do explore and find new locations, there's never a complete change of scene such as Graham's move to the mountains or to the beach/islands in KQ5. Instead, you probe steadily deeper into each location. I'm not sure why I find this pleasing, though.

It has easily the best balance of mature storytelling and good puzzle design of the series, good environments to explore, very good voice acting and music, plus it possesses quasi-branching paths to the ending.

pfftt... everyone know what the best game in the series is.

everyone loves that game.... right?...right?

darthkiwi

I actually liked it. XD

But clearly, a game with lines like "Alack, whence came this foul tempest?" is as good as Shakespeare. Just on the writing alone. Because, you know, "alack". And "whence." And "Tempest" is practically a Shakespeare title shoe-in! Right?

There are many reasons why I love KQ6.

Probably the best is the freedom of the design. You can choose to solve things in any path you choose --of course there's some gating-- but in general, I love the possibility of having 5 isles to my disposal that I can visit back and forth.

I generally play KQ5 more, just for the unintentional LOLs, but I concede that KQ6 is a better game, particularly in how it's written. It's got the most well-written antagonist in the series, as well; Alhazred isn't my favorite, but he has more personality than any other baddie. And of course we have a protagonist who makes girl's hearts swoon. Can't go wrong there.

True. Although his father ain't too bad lookin' either, but then again, Alexander has been said to be the spitting image of him.

Graham does have those obscene biceps, complemented by that tunic that is two sizes too small.

I also like how Alexander is just generally a really nice guy. I got the impression he united Beauty and Beast because he wanted to help them both, and he never played the "Oh, by the way, something horrific will happen to me if you don't help me" card on Beauty. And I got the impression that he did things because he wanted to help people, not because he would get something out of it.

Yeah - there are a few places in KQ5 that felt to me as if Graham was only helping people for what he could get in return.

You can have your needle back, which you actually own, if you give me your expensive cloak.

That just felt out of character for Graham to me. Sure, he gets things for helping people, but I think he's generally helping to be helping, not to get a reward.

I know what you mean. Graham always came across to me as a genuinely nice guy who just wanted to help - I mean, he gives the annoying tree woman her heart back, and he could have sold that! Same goes for the bee and ant puzzles. But a lot of other exchanges he makes - the spinning wheel for the toy, the needle for the cloak, the toy for the sledge - are very utilitarian. Many of them end up with Graham getting the worse end of the deal, sure, but it still seemed like he entered those exchanges for personal gain.

Which is something that I don't think happened very much in KQ6. I know it's an odd thing to get fussy about, because adventure games are all about exchanges and personal gain, but I still think the character of your avatar is very important.

Alexander was such a whiny, naive douchenozzle, I felt like foisting him upon Cassima was a crime, so I never beat the game on purpose.

I like the implication that you accidentally beat KQ6.
