It definitely has a more involved plot line, but contrivance does not equal a better product.

"You've got to keep one eye looking over your shoulder
you know it's going to get harder and harder as you
get older - but in the end you'll pack up, fly down south, hide your head in the sand.  Just another sad old man, all alone and dying of cancer." - Dogs, Pink Floyd.

Because the other games in the series weren't forced or contrived in the slightest.

Sorry, I read your post wrong. I thought you were saying that KQ6 was "contrived," even though you used the word "contrivance."

Of course, an argument can be made for contrived plot points in any of these games.

KQ6's plot IS contrived.  It is classic fantasy romance novel schlock.

However, for the most part, its characters are better developed, and the way in which the machinations of the plot are gradually revealed to and uncovered by the player is what makes it special.

Still not as good as KQ5 though.

When I played KQ6 for the first time, I felt like something was missing. In retrospect, I now realize that it was missing a woefully inept, bored-sounding narrator.

"Graham should be very careful around a big ol' bear!"

On a related note, it's not a good idea to Google image search "the pouch is empty."

I gotcha.

I find KQ6 to be a fun game, if a bit convoluted.  Honestly, I didn't have as much of a delightful time playing as I did other King's Quest games.  But I still like it.  I straight up hate KQVII!!!

I think KQ5's narrator sounds neither bored or inept. He's a colorful, sort of rough hewn narrator. He fits the game.

Also KQ5's narrator seemed a bit more sublime. KQ6's narrator kind of played it melodramatic at times.

I hated those moments in KQ5 where the narrator kept plugging his own website.  By far the worst moment though was when I tried to use the hand icon on the ocean, and Roberta Williams, Josh Mandel, and Andy Hoyos came on and started talking about ninjas.
