Yes, it predates Zork.

See, this is why you shouldn't let me draw.

I killed the thread.

The game was written by Robert Arnstein, but it's really just a cheesy rip-off of an older game written by David Platt, which is itself an expanded/updated version of an even older game written by Don Wood.

Amazingly, you can still find runnable versions of all three games on the internet.

Only the Arnstein version fits my drawing, however.

Rogue? ???

((I mean... I could have just googled Arnstein and all that, but actually, I'm just guessing))

I looked it up. Somewhat surprisingly, this predates Rogue as well.

Hm, I'm assuming it's a text adventure if it's that old? :P

I see a pyramid... Not sure what the "MM" means...

The Don Wood game I mentioned earlier is the first text adventure game.

If you consider yourself an adventure game fan and don't mind typing things like "GET LAMP", or "OPEN DOOR", you really should try the Don Wood or David Platt games. It's where it all started. Or even the Arnstein one. They're all good.

I actually never finished this game, and only recently found out why. In all the rooms, the exits are directions, like N, S, E, W. In a couple you can go UP or DOWN (I think you can just type U or D). The exits are not always clearly identified in the room description, so you end up just trying them all in most of the rooms.

Well, it turns out there's exactly ONE room that has an unlabeled exit in a mid-direction, northwest, I think. I never found that exit, and the room beyond. And you can't finish the game until you do. Grrrrrrr.

You dreaded seeing this:
YOU'RE IN A MAZE OF TWISTY PASSAGES, ALL ALIKE.

But you had to, in order to find this:
THERE IS A LARGE VENDING MACHINE HERE.

Well, in that case I'm going to guess Adventure and Colossal Cave, both of which were versions of the very first adventure game (for which the genre is named) :P

Not sure how the pyramid or "MM" thing work into it, though. But then I've only ever heard of them, never played them. :P

Yes, the Don Wood and David Platt games were called Colossal Cave, or Adventure, or The Colossal Cave Adventure.

The Robert Arnstein port for the TRS-80 had a different name with a different mythos behind it. But it was exactly the same as David Platt's game, but with different names and a few spelling/grammar differences.

Ohhhh, I see! I had no idea this existed! :D

So, is there an actual pharaoh's curse in the game, or is that misleading marketing? Or did they sort of rename an "Adventure" character to fit in with the pyramid theme?

Would you like to draw another one (since I didn't actually get it) or would you like someone else to have a go? :)

Yes, it predates Zork.
Kind of?
This says that Pyramid 2000 was released in 1979.
This says that Zork was released by Infocom in 1980. But it also says that it was distributed by a hacker (Bob Supnik) in 1978.

Regardless, they both originated with Adventure (aka Colossal Cave Adventure.) :D

I played Pyramid 2000 briefly yesterday here. I found the vending machine but had no coins. :-\

I thought you got the coins early on. It's been 20+ years since I last attempted the game. I don't recall. I only recently discovered the bit about a room that's off to the NW somewhere.

And I didn't realize that a hacker released Zork before then. I just remember Zork and Infocom coming after I had played and struggled with Pyramid.

At the entrance to the Pyramid, I know there's the typical message of "Abandon hope, all ye who enter" (it's not phrased exactly that way), and there are plenty of ways to die, but I don't recall anything like a mummy coming to get you or anything like that.

Still, I do recommend you play Pyramid 2000 or Colossal Cave sometime. If you have a TRS-80 emulator, you can download Pyramid. There's also a website where you can play it online. Information about all of that can be found here: http://www.figmentfly.com/pyramid2000/pyramid.html

And Colossal Cave binaries can be downloaded for various platforms. I think there's even an iOS version.

Someone else can go. I'd likely pick another title no one's heard of like another Infocom game or something from Big 5 software.

OK, I have one. Forgive the use of text; I had no idea how to convey the title without it. XD
