Quote"After evaluating our position in the games market, we've decided to shift LucasArts from an internal development to a licensing model, minimizing the company's risk while achieving a broader portfolio of quality Star Wars games. As a result of this change, we've had layoffs across the organization. We are incredibly appreciative and proud of the talented teams who have been developing our new titles."

It's like having that guy who used to be your best friend, but whom you became estranged to over the years move to another country and now we can only wonder what could have been :(

Honestly, this can only be a good thing.

Lucasarts has sucked royal balls over the last 15 years or so.  Every promising project they started has ended up either cancelled or not living up to the hype.  The studio lost its s*** at the end of the golden adventure era and just couldn't get it back together.

They didn't say that there wouldn't be games based on Lucas properties, which WOULD be a tragedy.  In fact, they said quite the contrary.  What they said was that they're going to license out IPs like Star Wars (and presumably--we can only hope--Indiana Jones) to developers with actual talent.

We should be celebrating.

stika

I shall still mourn its passing though  :(

Bludshot

They hadn't put out anything good since Battlefront.  That was at least seven years ago.  All of the old school talent left a long time ago anyway.

I kinda saw this coming. Disney has done nothing but fire people ever since they took over Star Wars. It's getting kind of comical. They're putting all their efforts into hyping Star Wars 7, which I think we all know is going to be just like The Phantom Menace--no matter how bad or good it is, people are going to be disappointed, and it's going to make a ton of money regardless.

Looking back on Lucasarts, I'm going to give my honest opinion here: most of their games sucked.

Sure, Monkey Island was funny. The Jedi Knight games were kinda cool. Knights of the Old Republic was awesome before it turned into an MMORPG. Battlefront was really fun.

Conversely, however, we have Shadows of the Empire. Bad graphics, even for its time, and pathetically easy. Obi-Wan, which I doubt anybody remembers anymore. The best thing I can say about The Phantom Menace game is that it allows you to kill Anakin in it, though unfortunately this results in a game over. The Force Unleashed, in which a genuinely interesting plot get bogged down by buggy gameplay. The Old Republic, which is a good example of what happens when you over-hype something. The Force Unleased II, which fails in both the gameplay AND the story department. Yoda Stories, which is the worst game I have ever played. Super Bombad Racing, which I haven't played, but I'm sure it's lousy.

Also, what was the last Indiana Jones game that didn't have Legos in it? Anyone remember?

In closing, we have a studio that gave us some good stuff and some bad stuff. Like most other studios, mostly bad stuff.

Ugh Star Wars 7, if Disney is going to double down on that why the hell do they want a bunch of old farts starring in it?

The last Indy game without Legos was the GODAWFUL Indiana Jones and the Staff of Kings, for PS2 & Wii.  Trust me, it was horrible.  It was basically a Wii-mote whipping tech demo, with some vague Tomb Raider Legend clone elements--all horribly watered down of course.  It was just awful.  The whip and punching sound effects didn't even match the iconic sounds from the movie, and the Indiana Jones character model was missing a few distinct pieces of the iconic outfit.  The story was disjointed and you could clearly tell that significant elements had been cut out of the plot.  You aren't missing anything if you haven't played it.

Because people are dumb enough to believe that just because Mark Hamill, Harrison Ford and Carrie Fisher are back, that Star Wars will magically be cool again. However, I recognize that Mark Hamill and Carrie Fisher couldn't act to save their lives, and they're total dumbasses in real life, to boot. F*ck them and f*ck anybody who likes them.

Mark Hamill can't act?  Since when?  His Joker is iconic.

Bludshot

Yeah Mark has demonstrated he is perfectly fine as an actor, and a great voice actor, don't know about Carrie Fisher but I have never seen her in anything else besides the Blues Brothers.

My complaint is more in line with old Harrison Ford in the new Indiana Jones movie, just because you can doesn't mean you should.

Perhaps, though I'd argue that old Harrison was the LEAST of that movie's problems.  :)

Fair enough, but even if that movie was passable, curmudgeon Ford is still a glaring problem.

And that right there is how people should respond to inflammatory statements.

So yeah. I was having a bad day yesterday. Fortunately, the pills have kicked in.

I totally forgot about the Joker in Batman: TAS and the Arkham games. So, you got me there. Mark Hamill can act loony. He also unfortunately sounds petulant even in Return of the Jedi, which is my problem with his performance:

Leia: (pointing out stormtroopers) There are two more of them!
Luke: I see them (Leia takes off after them), no WAIT, LAY-UHH!

And then there was that deleted scene from A New Hope...

Leia: Aren't you a little short for a stormtrooper?
Luke: Well excuuuuuse me, princess!
I have no mouth, and I must scream.

For me any performance in Return of the Jedi was overshadowed by Admiral Ackbar quotes and Ian McDiarmid chewing the all that expensive looking scenery.
