So I was reading this article and it looks like Richard Garriott, A.K.A. Lord British, A.K.A. creator of the Ultima series  might be making a new game, not social/facebook game mind you, a REAL RPG

Who here can't wait for a true sequel to the Ultima games? And none of well.... this:

Oldbushie

I've never actually played Ultima but I've seen a lot of funny Youtube videos about it... maybe I should check if it's on GOG. :)

three of them are actually free on GOG.com (Ultima 4, Worlds of Ultima 1 and Worlds of Ultima 2)

but bare in mind, the control scheme for the games has aged horribly.

if I were to introduce anyone to the series I'd recommend the Ultima Underworld spinoffs which are really dungeon crawler games by the same makers of System Shock 2 and Deus Ex

Really? Does it say that in "The Codex of Ultimate Wisdom?"

stika

As much as I love spoony's videos, I feel he forgot to mention it how most of the games aged preeeeety bad control wise

If I can say just ONE THING about Ultima 9 I liked, I can safely say that I liked the music.

I actually liked Ultima 9's gameplay, though at the time I used a mod that fixed most of the gameplay issues

stika

and here it is, his newest project okay now here's what I don't get:

The man owns a company and has even used his money to go space... so why does he need a million dollars again?

It could be a gauge to see how many people would be interested.

And yes, he did go to space: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Richard_Garriott#Spaceflight
I have my cake and eat it too, until it's gone.  Then I can't do either.

Aww!  You have the Sword of Hugging +3!  All of your attacks deal affectionate damage!

He went to space?!
yep

again, unless I'm mistaken he did with his own money, he payed for it

soo.. why does he need a million dollars again?

heck from Tabula Rasa alone he earned $28 million, not the company, not dev house, HE ALONE earned 28 million

If you play some of the earlier ones (eg. Ultima 4) I think you have to resign yourself to engaging with it in a completely different way to today's games. I like to think of it as engaging with an old game the same way you'd, for example, engage with medieval literature: yes, it is completely possible to read/play both, but you have to be prepared to move out of your comfort zone and probably get very confused.

agreed, but I do think it's something he should have pointed out that as great as the games are, in many ways they have aged poorly.

By comparison's sake the Wizardry series which was launched just one year after Ultima aged much better in this regard

Blackthorne

Exactly.  This bell end paid millions to go to space, and now they're asking regular people for A MILLION DOLLARS?  The backers are taking all the risk on this, and this multi-millionaire isn't.  That ain't right.

yep, this really doesn't sit well with me

Especially when it currently looks like a 10 year old game.  But hey it has the kickstarter staple of bland concept art!
