It's disheartening how fast and easily we'll wreck our own history

BELIZE CITY - A construction company has essentially destroyed one of Belize's largest Mayan pyramids with backhoes and bulldozers to extract rock for a road-building project.

The head of the Belize Institute of Archaeology says the destruction was detected late last week.

Only a small portion of center of the pyramid mound was left standing.

Dr. Jaime Awe says he was sickened by the destruction of the Nohmul pyramid and temple platform, which date back about 2,300 years.

Photos of the portion that remained showed what appeared to be classic Mayan-arched chamber dangling above one clawed-out section.

The Nohmul complex sits on private land, but Belizean law states any pre-Hispanic ruins are under government protection.

Maybe it's just me, but unless it's illegal or there was still information to be learned from it, I don't really see the problem... >.>

It is both illegal AND not fully excavated.  So yes, and yes.  Did you read the article?

What's the problem?  Those who forget the past are doomed to repeat it.  It's an extant structure of an extinct race of people.  It's the history of our world.  If you can't see a problem in the preservation of such things, the problem is you.

Calm conversations, people.

Of course, if we preserve EVERY historic building eventually we'll run out of room for new ones. But that doesn't at all seem like the case here, regardless.

Jeez, Bt.  There's no need for personal attacks.

Also, Bt, the Mayans aren't extinct.  GAWD.

Saw this on FB earlier. Very sad to see that the human race in general has no motivation to preserve historical treasures.

I feel apathetic and slightly amused by this. It might have something to do with the fact that I recently took an alignment test, and the results I got back said that I was "Chaotic Evil."

...also, I believe the correct quotation is "Those who do not remember their history are doomed to do poorly on the Scholastic Aptitude Test."

Only the SAT doesn't have a history section  ;D

But you still need to pass history to finish High-School in the US... right?

KatieHal

You do. Though 'pass' can mean 'scrape by and forget' or even 'was passed for reasons other than actually earning a pass grade'.

It's basically like that though for every classroom subject here (English, Math, Science, etc.)
