Glad to know Canada's been around that long, but I thought it had been around longer(I must be thinking of before it was official).

Quoteit's Rob's graduation

I don't know if that's a good thing, or a bad thing. What if he leaves for a week!?

*panics*

Well, in what is now the geographical area of Canada, there have been permanent residents since 1604 (Port Royale, now Annapolis Royal, Nova Scotia).  Vikings came by in Newfoundland a good millennia ago, but didn't stick around.  And who knows how long the Natives have been here. :P
But the Confederation or whatever it's called was signed July 1st, 1867, making it an independent country separate from England (but still a part of the British Commonwealth).

Enough history for one day. :D

It's good as long as Rob is happy.  He'll be missed, but as long as he's happy, it's for the best.

Happy Birthday Canada! Yay!

I'd call you guys the better third of the continent, but I haven't been to Mexico or met many Mexicans yet so it wouldn't be a fully-informed opinion. ;)

I've been to Mexico and I absolutely loved it.

So it basically comes down to what you like:

Crappy Overpriced US Pisswater (aka: US beer) and baseball
Great Canadian Beer and hockey!
Good Mexican beer and soccer.

:D

I don't like beer ;) but I like hockey the best out of all those. Partly because it (well, floor hockey, anyway, can't skate worth crap) is one of the few sports I don't totally suck at.

Mostly, I've just met a lot of really cool Canadians online... and several aspects of your country sound better than ours. ;P

Peace & Luv, Liz

J-ROC

Well, me, I wouldn't want to live in the US for both political and crime reasons.  (I know there are perfecty nice neighbourhoods, etc....but it's still worse than Canada)

And I wouldn't want to live in Mexico for socio-economic reasons.  Can you say "What middle class?"  And I don't speak a lick of Spanish (except a few cuss words. :D)

I guess what I'm trying to say is that I'm happy where I am, because of the beer, hockey, and healthcare. :D

I hope for you guys' sakes they don't privatize it either... that's part of how *our* health care system got in such a mess. :P

Peace & Luv, Liz

A lot of countries have a coupled system, with both private and public clinics, and run them successfully. As long as they regulate the private clinics (ie: the same services are available for both private and public), I don't see too much of a problem with a two-tier system.
If some rich monkey wants to pay three times as much to have whatever operation RIGHT NOW instead of waiting for a bit for it, why shouldn't they be able to?
Again, it would have to be regulated, separated so the rich can't "cut in line", and the same services would have to be available for the public....then maybe it could work.

If the system is run well, there's no problem. The issue here in the US is that there are few public/free clinics, and the services and treatments available to them usually aren't as good/expansive as paid ones have. :P

Quote from: Yonkey on July 02, 2004, 10:46:56 AMAnyway, the Liberals said their main focus now is on shortening waiting times in hospitals.  We'll see if they stay true to their promise this time.  XD
Hmmm, I've heard that somewhere before, and a lot closer, I believe from our Northern Neighbors. ::) Yes, we even have British patients coming to Belgium for treatment! :X

Anyway, our Belgian birthday is July 21, the Flemish birthday is July 11. Don't rightly know when Flanders was 'founded'.
Happy Birthday Canada!

Only one tier here, the public one. Economically speaking, I don't see how a private company (a clinic in this instance) would endure public control, unless they have some sort of monopoly. 8)
BTW, completely free is never good. Besides, someone always has to pay for it, if it's not you directly, it's you through taxes. At the doctor, we pay him, and we get a part of it back. At the pharmacy, the part we should get back is already included in the price. :-X

Yeah, it was free here for awhile....and it may not have worked perfectly, but it has and continues to work a lot better than other systems.  (ie: the US)
And Canadians knew they were paying for it in their taxes, but I think if you asked most Canadians if they mind their tax money going to healthcare, I don't think they'd be too upset.
Now, if they mind their tax money going to three defunct subs bought off the british, they might get a little choked.
The problems with Canada's healthcare system now is in part it's funding....but mostly how it's run.  The administrative side of things.  They've got problems to fix before they should chuck more money into it.  Going to a two tiered is a possible solution for cost reduciton, and such....but again, it would have to be heavily regulated and also separated to not interfere with the existing system and services.
